What existing band who brought in a new member took off and became successful because of that new member?
I was thinking the other day about YES.
They had two LP's recorded that didn't exactly set the music world on fire. They were on the verge of being dropped from their label.
YES knew they needed new blood in the band, so they let go original guitarist Peter Banks.
Enter Steve Howe.
The YES Album was the result. The rest is history. Mr. Howe saved the day for that band.
