New Members Who Made All The Difference

What existing band who brought in a new member took off and became successful because of that new member?

I was thinking the other day about YES.
They had two LP's recorded that didn't exactly set the music world on fire. They were on the verge of being dropped from their label.

YES knew they needed new blood in the band, so they let go original guitarist Peter Banks.

Enter Steve Howe.

The YES Album was the result. The rest is history. Mr. Howe saved the day for that band.

Can you think of any other situations where bringing in a new member was the spark that got a particular band successful. I can think of several more. but I'll turn it over to the TB faithful...

I agree with you. It proved itself even more that now John has gone and they have Josh, they aren't as good, IMO, as they were in the John-era days. Shame really, they're my favourite band.

No way to know for sure, but my gut tells me Metallica wouldn't have gone very far without Burton and Hammett.

I also think that if Page and JPJ hadn't settled for Plant and Bonham, Led Zep wouldn't have become as huge as they did. I love that actually settling for a singer and drummer they didn't originally want ended up making them bigger than they could have ever hoped for.

Maybe overlooking the obvious. I'm sure Pete Best was a very good drummer, but looks like his old band did very well after the change. Not sure how much was due to this change though. They probably would have done okay anyway.

Oh, and although I love Paul Di'Anno era Maiden, replacing him with Bruce Dickinson is really what allowed them to hit super stardom, IMO.
