Unpleasant was probably too harsh. Unnecessary is better way to explain it on an active bass. It’s a big improvement on my P basses but not on my active bass.I found the DCX is excellent on my passive basses and somewhat unnecessary on my active Sadowsky and Dingwall. I was surprised by that observation, but it did not become unpleasant. However with a P-bass, the DCX is the perfect pedal.
ExactlyThe P Bass is mid forward complimenting the lack of mid controls on the DCX. The P Bass has somewhat hot output and drives the DCX saturation very nicely with nice touch sensitivity. The DCX makes my P Bass sound just like a P Bass but better. It's like it was designed with the P Bass in mind. If you could stuff the DCX into the P Bass body, it would be the perfect preamp for that model, IMHO. In contrast, the DCX did little for my Sadowsky and I turned it off.
I can see this if used as an always on tonal enhancer. I use mine as a drive pedal and it works equally well with passive and active basses to me.Unpleasant was probably too harsh. I need this! That drive sounds insanely great, judging from the demos!
Right to my taste.
Quite close to the subtle overdrive I have on my current "clean" tone, as well as my more prominent medium/high gain dedicated overdrive, just even greater sounding, like clearer and more focused.

Where do you place the DCX in your signal chain? Do you put it before or after the compressor?I spent some time with my Pbass and the DCX today, and I now see what you mean. Even with all knobs at 12, and the Voice on flat, there’s something with the EQ mode that just enhances the Pbass tone beautifully. It makes my Pbass just sound BETTER. No real coloration to the tone, just an enhancement. It’s kinda magic and I love it.
Thanks!I always put the compressor first. It evens out my bass tone, then goes into the DCX. I am not desperate to have the Adaptive Circuitry, I know it’s a good feature of the DCX but I usually like my tone to be even. I tried the other way around and I much preferred the comp first. YMMV.
- I think I am getting better at using it What you lose in money, you gain in toneWent back and read all 54 pages. You guys have convinced me to try a DCX. Reading TB always ends up costing me a lot of money!!
Happy Thanksgiving to all DCX users!
Dropping in to 1. sing the praises of this pedal in my setup. I run it in the HXS FX loop so I can put it anywhere in the chain. And 2. Throw out there that if any Black DCX owners are interested in selling or trading to lemme know!
I think the airchild is a great comp, esp given the price tag. Makes the bass feel more live and covers a lot of ground from a versatility standpoint.Nice set up! I'm intrigued how you use your Airchild and Cali CB. I currently use the Airchild and love it. I also used to have the 1st Cali CB a while ago.
