New Origin Effects DCX Bass

Gemini ai is telling me that it’s ok to run the dcx bass with a line level input. It’s even suggesting I operate it at 12v for that input level. Looking for human confirmation. Thx.

Running the DCX BASS at 12V will bring you no benefit whatsoever. The pedal won't break - we've designed it to take much more serious voltages without issue - but it will run hotter whilst providing no sonic or headroom improvements.

The pedal internally boosts the 9V input to varying higher voltages as necessary, and the input buffers have enough headroom for line-level signal usage, obviously you'll need to adjust the controls on the pedal to compensate for similar drive levels.

If you ever have any questions, don't hesitate to get in touch with us directly via [email protected] where we have AI (analogue intelligence) happy to answer questions.

Thinking of getting a DCX to have in EQ mode for always on breakup and pushing it with the SoloDallas BassX into overdrive when needed. Anybody tried pushing the w DCX with a boost?
Doing the reverse where the BassX is always on and the DCX is turned on for OD (using the drive side). Imo theres a sweet spot for the DCX in either mode and boosting it into further saturation isn't all that since it gets into a fuzzier territory. Using an active PJ FWIW

I’d love to see Origin do a DCX variant that adds a DI, and perhaps an OD footswitch. Or maybe a Neve clone or something to compete with the Noble. They are so locked into amp recreations that a high end bass DI doesn’t seem in the calculus. Well, except for the DCX.
This. If they combined the DCX and Bass Comp into a single DI enclosure, you’d basically have a UA 6176 preamp in a DI pedal. I’d buy that in a heartbeat! There’s no 6176 preamp pedal on the market right now.

@Origin_Effects seeking opinions/advice on directly driving a Subway amp's line level return using the DCX Bass.

Aside from that, It certainly handles hotter instruments well, and sounds terrific right before the inputs of the Subway amps I've tried.

I'm going to make the assumption the Subway Amp you're referring to is the MESA Boogie Subway series? I don't see why you'd have any issues running the DCX straight into the FX RETURN. I can't see documentation specifically saying it's line level, but I doubt it'll matter much, plug in, crank some volume controls, get playing!

Thanks for the reply.

Anybody else running their DCX Bass last in their effects chain or into something expecting line level signals?

What is your question? No harm in trying it if you have both available to you. Personally I don’t find the DCX EQ sufficient to replace a more full-featured preamp as I love in my Mesa heads or other dedicated preamp pedals (like the Origin Super Vintage), but YMMV.

Just me asking on TB before making the effort in the real world.

The OE documentation refers to the DCX used more as a boost (into a preamp) than as a preamp replacement itself.

“Preamp” unfortunately doesn’t have a very definitive definition when it comes to bass/guitar gear. Lots of things are called preamp that don’t boost the level of signal of an instrument much if any over a passive instrument’s volume. In the case of the DCX I would say from experience that the levels on tap are pretty significant- it may not give you full rackmount line-level signals but probably plenty of signal to drive the power amp based on my experience running other pres into my Subway heads. Fortunately the Volume on the Subways comes post FX loop so you have a decent range to work with.

Just catching up on this thread for research porpoises.

I’m looking at sticking a DCX in between an Empress compressor and para EQ deluxe. Are you still liking the DCX and EQ?

I’m enjoying the flexibility of the the Empress EQ (especially the high pass and low pass filters) but my clean sound feels like it’s missing something. I’m wondering the DCX could help with a little vibe.

I have the BassRig SV for a more driven sound as and when needed but I’m struggling a little for a nice clean tone.
I do this exact thing, except I have a cali76 bass compressor. It’s SO worth it. The DCX LF and HF turned up sound magical, and the empress para eq deluxe has the hpf, and lpf to tame any harshness.

The Dcx bass gets super thick with the lows, but the empress makes em punchy!

I also have a John east j retro deluxe (standard voicing) preamp installed in my bass, so my sounds gonna be a bit different than a typical jazz. I actually have to tame the lows on my bass a lot more cause of that John East.
I actually find passive mode easier to rock, but sound guys and studio engineers love the sound of the John East.

Final thing I added. Was a Finally V3 after the empress para eqMKII deluxe, to add some tube. I run it super clean. No distortion here. Funk, slap n reggae for days.

Nearly this exact setup has been my core sounds for the last year, and it's great. I use an Omnicomp. I run a fair amount of dirt as well, so I did my best to dial in a big wide bass boost on the ParaEQ to emulate the LF on the DCX. Having the bass makeup after all the dirt instead of before keeps things thick.

I see a pultec too!
