New Origin Effects DCX Bass

In a moment of craziness I did put my DCX on sale a few days ago. I thought to myself that I didn’t really need it now that my main preamp is a Tech21 VTDI. How silly of me?!

I took some time tonight to actually try them together, and with the DCX in Drive mode as an added overdrive, it sounded amazing. And I realised I would regret selling the DCX. It is regarded as an outstanding pedal here on TB, and I used to praise it too.

So I took it off Reverb and it’s back on my pedalboard.

Pbass > Cali76 Bass compressor > DCX Bass > VT Bass DI = amazing rock tone.
After nearly exclusive use in EQ mode, I've recently discovered the greatness of the DCX Drive mode.

Module 4 (comp/boost) > HX One [DCX > RFE] > BBA > LBA 2020... all that in the send/return loop of a Caveman BP1-C.

Drive mode *really* compliments the HX octave effexts.

Do you have the DCX in the HX One loop? I assume you are using DCX OD after the HX octaver (which I really like, the best tracking)?

Right, my [] brackets indicate a send/return insert.

Here, I can toggle between the One's Pre and Post effect insert, depending on the chosen effect. A little gain on the BBA helps saturate the LBA before it hits the Caveman's preamp volume. The One seems to add noise when in Insert mode that the BBA helps somewhat to reduce.

smart choice. I have 2 of them and I use them both all the time. They are excellent.

Cool! I have a pbass and the same pedals but use either the Cali+DCX or the VTDI. What is the sweet spot you found in setttings combining them? How di you color the VTDI character? Tks!

These are almost the exact same settings that I had in my head to try out (gotta bust out my pedalboard today). I have the voice switch in the med position currently, but I though "hmm, I might want a bit more highs, how bout I set it back to flat position and use the H.F. knob to back the highs a bit, and keep the L.F. around noon to have a nice tight, transparent overdrive".

Yeah it works well that way. I used to use the Med voicing a lot but realised I prefer the Flat one, it feels more open, and backing off the HF does help taming some brightness/harshness. Even with the treble down on both the VT and the DCX, I still have plenty of highs in my tone, but not overbearingly so.

Can anyone recommend pedal topper buttons that fit the DCX? The stomp switch seems to have a larger diameter......

bare foot buttons big bore fits mine
Can confirm this works: I use these. I actually have an extra one or two of these in silver. PM me if interested. It doesn't make sense to ship just one, but if you need a handful of Barefoot Buttons it could.

First time using the DCX with an active bass and I’m pretty surprised, it doesn’t sound good at all. That’s saying something because it’s my favorite pedal on my passive basses.

My guess is it’s reacting to extra high freq information coming from the basses preamp because it goes from doing nothing to very static-y unpleasant drive with no in between.

Gonna keep messing with it and report back.

For some reason, I want to hear this unpleasant drive.

I don’t get unpleasant drive with my 3 band Stingray. I mostly have the eq flat and I boost my signal a bit with Broughton BBA.

Nor do I with the Mike Pope preamp in my bass. I'm also keen to hear an audio sample of this unpleasantness.
I agree with you both I use it with SIRE V7 2nd Gen, Charvel PJ IV Audere Classic, & 4HH/5H Stingray Specials. DCX Bass drive section is my alternative choice to my MBD3. For a different low to mid grit vibe.

That drive sounds insanely great, judging from the demos!

Right to my taste.

Quite close to the subtle overdrive I have on my current "clean" tone, as well as my more prominent medium/high gain dedicated overdrive, just even greater sounding, like clearer and more focused.

I found the DCX is excellent on my passive basses and somewhat unnecessary on my active Sadowsky and Dingwall. I was surprised by that observation, but it did not become unpleasant. However with a P-bass, the DCX is the perfect pedal.
