new pickups?

Best thing to do is use the Search function and see what people have done in the past.

Different pickups are good for different sounds. First decide what kind of sound you want, then go for the pickups.

Make sure they will fit in your bass before you buy.

If you get pickups with pole pieces, some folks think it's important that they match your string spacing exactly. Others think as long as the top and bottom strings fit within the outermost pole pieces, you're good to go.

Some pickups have blades instead of poles, so as long as all the strings fit over the blade, you're good to go.

In my opinion a cheap preamp drags your sound down worse than cheap pickups. I was really impressed with what an Aguilar OBP-3 pre did for my $350 Ibanez, even with the cheap stock pickups.
