New PJ Mustang at Summer NAMM

I have never seen a Mustang bass in my local GC store - not new, not used.

I asked about them and was told they have no choice about what new gear is sent to the store.

Hey All....been jonesing for the sonic blue myself. I currently have a Squier Mustang with LaBella 1954 flats. The stock P/U, at least to me, is pretty hot. How do the two P's compare? If the J P/U is weak, do ya'll think that the magnet trick from the Jaguar SS would work?

Ooooft! I received an email this morning from one of the larger UK guitar and bass retailers. They now have the PJ Mustangs in stock in all three colours, for £729. I feel like I did quite well to pick up my MIJ Mustang bass 2nd hand for £400. Still interested to see what the other MIJ Mustang basses are when they eventually land.

Went out Monday and checked the two "big" stores in Cincinnati and none were there. Didn't even notice the Duo-Sonics either. Then went to a smaller "big" store. They had a couple of the Duo-Sonics but no PJ. The smaller store said they were getting stuff in almost every day.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but...and I know that I am crazy here...if you put flats on one of these, can you get CLOSE to a Hofner sound? I'm looking for that sound in a more substantial package. I am well aware that the hollow sound comes from a hollow bass, but I thought that I would ask.... feel free to ignore! Ha!

I'm going to say 'no', tentatively. I'm not sure how much the hollow element of a Hofner influences tone, but the low-mass wooden bridge of a Hofner might, and the two pickups at opposite ends of the body certainly will. You could buy a Mustang and mod it with mini humbuckers, one down at the end of the neck and one butting up against the bridge (unless you want that 'Cavern' configuration), but I would probably be way happier doing this to a Squier Bronco than a brand new Mustang.

I think the guy I talked to at GC meant this weekend.

I dunno, with the reports concerning the volume differences between the jazz and split p volume issue some have mentioned, I'm leary of QC on these already. Playing one may change that though. We'll see.

Does anyone know if this uses the same P/U's as the Jaguar SS? If so, the magnet trick would probably solve the volume issues.

My local GC got one in today and I got to play it. I liked the build and the feel, sound is lacking. The P is not as good as my P Junior IMO and I'd never see myself using the thin, weak and tiny sound from the J. Even with both pickups on it was weak. Didn't sound anything like a Fender J bass, certainly not as good as the JB62SS. Disappointing

I didn't do a side by side with a JB62SS, but I owned a JB for a few months earlier this year. When I picked up and tried this Mustang it reminded me a lot of the same tones.

What it looks like from the responses here is these offset mustang basses seem to be hit or miss in quality. That's too bad.

Glad my wife ordered one of the CIJ ones, then. I'm sure a quick pickup swap would do a world of good, but you shouldn't have to do that to a brand new bass.

Brio....now that you have had couple of more days with the P/J...what are your impressions?

Maybe it was the one they got in but it certainly didn't have that Fender J growl to it. It sounded tiny and hollow. Like I was playing a low quality budget J bass. Played it on a Fender Rumble 40 FYI

My local GC showed a sonic blue in stock so I went to check it out. It wasn't on the floor and a staff member had to go back and unbox it.

The toggle switch stem got broke off during shipping. Anyhow, he handed it to me and apologized for the switch. Another guy was checking out an Ibanez bass so I just sat down to get a feel of the neck on the Mustang. Felt comfy and the fret ends felt ok but it was quite neck heavy. I left without plugging it in. May go back if they get a Red one in stock.

Regarding some previous posts .......One thing I did notice though is the sonic blue example they have at the store certainly wouldn't be mistaken for white.

I personally think they should have just used either a standalone P or original Mustang pups in it. It's almost like they had the molds and wanted to offer a mustang, but didn't want to bother making and routing for the pickups anymore, so they just threw some lazy ass MIM P/J pups in and called it done. This bass just seems like the wrong format for a J bridge.
