New PJ Mustang at Summer NAMM

I finally ordered mine from Andertons in the UK yesterday and it will arrive to me in Hong Kong on Monday!!! So quick!

The stores in the states won't ship fender overseas but I am getting a real good deal compared to the uk as I don't have to pay tax on it!

I asked stores in hong Kong that a fender dealers but they said it would take a week to get me the price and at least 6 months for the bass to arrive!! I could get a custom bass in that time!

Anyway....I've ordered the PJ mustang in white and will let you all know what I think on Monday

Hopefully the head doesn't snap off in transit like my most recent delivery that I'm still trying to sort out the compensation for!!

For anyone living in the UK, if you go to the iPlayer and watch the most recent Later with Jools Holland (episode 6 of series 49) the bassist for Teleman is playing one of these Mustang PJ Basses. Very prominent in the second number they play. Thought it sounded good, and looked great. No idea if everything is stock or not. I can't afford one right now, and am loving my Jaguar SS, but if some money unexpectedly arrives from somewhere I'd be very tempted.

Pretty nice job on the pick guard. I'm just not that good with tools. I noticed you put foam under the bridge - I just did the same with mine - the tone it gave me was much more to my liking.

I really wonder why here in Europe a PJ MiM Mustang should cost about 200€ more than a PJ MiM Jaguar while sharing most materials, actually using less wood for the Mustang.
That may really prevent it from getting any attention over this side of the pond. Almost on thousand euros for a short scale mexican bass?
I really hope I could at least fine one to try, but as for SS I'll stick with my Bronco. Also, I have a OCD problem with the pickups of the PJ Mustang. They just look too big on that bass to me.

Here in the US, the MIM Mustang is $50 less than the MIM Jaguar. You guys are getting a raw deal over there.

Have you tried one yet? The pickups seem normal when you've actually got one in your hands and are playing it.
If you're super picky, they might look slightly large in the pics, but they don't in person.

Great thread on the new Mustangs. I had been planning on buying an older model on Reverb but saw that these were available and immediately pulled the trigger. Sweetwater is sold out now but they get them, I should have one on the way.

Question -- any neck dive on these? I have a Squier Jag SS and it had some. I improved it with lighter tuning pegs but it didn't go away completely. I wasn't sure if that was a quality that most SS had.

Here in the UK the new Mustangs are about £680. Which seems way out of line given they're about $550 (£450) plus sales tax in the US. I bought my Jaguar short scale for £185 back in Feb, though, and see they've gone up to £240 now. Don't know if that jump would have happened anyway, or is partly down to the collapse of the pound post Brexit, but either way definitely feeling we're getting a raw deal.

A quick look at a converter shows 680 equal to about $829, so ya - a bit high.
The MIJ Mustang re-issues were about $750 a few years back when I got mine.
Anyways - I think this new P/J Mustang is fully worth the money.
The Jag SS's have gone up a bit here too since I got mine.
They're still a bargain though.

Jazzbrew - my P/J Mustang's got a bit of neck dive. Not the worst I've had by far,
but it's noticeable.

My PJ mustang arrived last night, I got it shipped from UK and including delivery was 605 pounds because I don't have to pay VAT in Hong Kong. I ordered it on Friday from Andertons and it arrived yesterday!!

I am so happy with my bass, straight out of the box it was set up perfectly for me. The action was nice and low as I like it and others have said before the neck is sweet and so fast to play.

Perhaps I have been very lucky from reading some previous posts but the switch works perfectly, and the P and J pickups seem very well balanced volume wise as do the strings to one another. The tone knob is so responsive and gives a great range. I found myself either playing the P or the J rather than the PJ for some reason.

I have a jag ss at the moment but the new bass feels a lot more quality instrument in every respect, the pickups are definitely better sounding. I also like the fact the the mustang pj is heavier as it makes it feel more solid when playing.

They're fairly balanced. I have a standard width strap on mine and it stays put. I wear my basses a little on the high side, fwiw.

Just what I wanted to hear Brio. I actually wear my basses extremely high (bow tie-ish) and I play with a 4" strap. I think I'll be just fine.

I can't wait till Sweetwater gets them in stock! I've already ordered...

The local GC had a Sonic Blue one the rack earlier tonight, it does look more blue than white in person as does the mint colored pick guard. Fit and finish was pretty good overall. Although I'm recovering from surgery on my left arm, I was able to plug in and just play some open notes and mess around quickly. The neck pickup had a nice warm and more rounded tone to it which I really liked. Switching to the bridge to me seemed to give it a much more snappier tone for lack of a better word, but no reduction in volume to speak of. Having both pickups selected gave it the best tone IMO. No static while toggling the P/U selector either. Overall I really liked it. This picture does not show the blue that well either as you can see.

Ok - I just got back from my lunch break where I walked over to GC and got to try a Sonic Blue one of these babies.

I can concur - the blue is VERY light, but it is definitely blue. Best when compared to a white bass next to it - honestly, I would've preferred they went a bit darker just to separate it more from the white one. I feel like the blue would get lost under most situations.

Anyway... the thing played great and I really liked the tonal variety of the 2 pickups. J was nice and honky, maybe a bit less so than a standard J, but I prefer that as I think it's a tone that's a bit more useable. The P was fat and LOUD. I definitely agree that there was a noticeable volume difference between the 2 pickups, although I'm sure this could be fixed with a proper set up. Action was decent but could be dialed in more. The J pickup height was uneven, so that was odd, but again probably never got set up out of the box. I also dig the satin neck.

Do I like it enough to replace my Pawn Shop Mustang? Probably not, but only because I already have a PJ bass and a Mustang, so this would be superfluous to me. Also I really like the vintage look of my sunburst PS Mustang. It doesn't have the tonal variety of this, but honestly that's not what I want out of that bass. I'd love to compare the tones of the two against each other, but I was playing at GC through a rig I was unfamiliar with, so I couldn't get a read on how they would sound side by side. I also feel like the fit and finish of the PS Mustang is a bit nicer than the PJ Mustang I played - I feel better about paying more for it. If I didn't have the Pawn Shop I would absolutely consider this - the price is great, the tone is great. Awesome bass overall.

I've never even seen one other than through pictures posted online but I can't imagine that it would be impossible to wire it VVT or BVT if you like. If you want to keep the two hole control plate you would have to use stacked pots/knobs for the VV or the VT but that should not be a problem.
