New quandry

Change the band's name?

Maybe the bar owner figures Trout Leg could come off as some sort of a disrespectful play on the genius of Trout Mask Replica...and they still haven't recovered from the fallout of letting "As Non-Treatening as the Most Popular Dairy Beverage' play there...

Just change it up for a night - read the recent thread about needing a one-off name and choose what suits you.

Do a cost/benefit analysis.

Name recognition is the issue here. Do you have a healthy fan base and list of venues that know and accept the band as "Troutleg"? If so, changing the name will have a disorienting affect and may decimate part of the healthy fan base you spent so much time building. Change the band name to acquire one gig? No way I'd do it, unless it was temporary for that gig, then you go right back to the name your fan base and booking entities know.

However, if it's a permanent change and you stand more to gain in the long run by changing the name, by all means consider it.

I was in a cover band with a pretty goofy name, and the band leader often expressed his regrets about the band name, but he had established the band with so many venues, patrons, and a fan base over time that changing the name would have been marketing suicide.

FWIW, I like Troutleg just fine for an originals band, if the music fits.

Hi,

I can't help but wonder, WHY did he say it was offensive? Does that phrase mean something I'm not aware of?

EH? How on earth did you arrive at a 'sexual connotation' with regard to Troutleg? Explain, please.

I thought I had explained myself in my post. For a definitive answer you'll have to ask the club owner why he feels it may be offensive. We are all merely speculating and have not heard anything from the original poster. Like, why that name in the first place? What does it mean?

Such earth-shaking topics we discuss. This thread should be in "Band Management" anyway.

Thank you for your indulgence,

My long time band was named "Ten Inch Willy" so Troutleg seems harmless to me. But when we played a gig with kids around we called ourselves "The TIW Band". In 15 years we only had 1 bar that had a problem with our name. I believe the most important thing about a band name is that people will remember it.

Funny. A musician I play with, in one of the bands I am in, is in a band called Velvet Merkin. I had to look it up. That band gets booked because I do not think people know what a Merkin is.

I just needed further clarification.

BTW, a trout is also known over here as an unattractive, middle-aged woman. Even referencing that, I found no sexual connotations. Vive la difference, and all that cak.

Yeppers, too bad you aren't a Beefheart tribute band.

Of course then you would not be agonizing over upscale dining and dancing venues so it's a six of one kinda thing.

It would be kinda cool to open with Bat Chain Puller ot Floppy Boot Stomp and close with Sam Was a Showing Scalp Flattop, but hey, to each their own.

If you want to work in a market that pays decent $$$, having PC band name is the least of your worries. You're going to have to act like adults and maybe
do some schmoozin' to a point of suck up. There are a lot of great musicians sitting home on a Saturday night because they don't accept this issue.

Explain to your potential meal ticket what a really offensive band name is (there is no shortage of them to pick from) and then slowly say "TroutLeg" and smile. See? That doesn't really fit in with "The Dead Kennedys", "Poison", or "The Partridge Family" now, does it? If that doesn't work, get an adjustable "kickstand" for the bottom strap button of your P bass and change the band name to "TortLeg".
