New Reeves Cabs Pics (Prototype)

Thanks! I did alot of research when shopping for the amp head, and I have had to be patient for the cabs to become available, but like they say, good things are worth waiting for!

One of the things that really attracted me to these cabs (other than the obvious match to my Reeves amp head) is that they don't have any tweeters. I respect those bassists out there that love cabs with tweets, but they just aren't for me. The most recent rig I had included a pair of Bergantino HT-115's. Those cabs sounded great, but I never used the tweeters. I always kept the attenuater knob for the tweeters set to zero just so I could get the sound of the 15" drivers (I'm not into that Seinfeld hi-fi bass sound). I prefer a more vintage tone. I really like the Reeves cab design with the flared port to push more sound out into the audience farther. Kudos to Bill and his design team!

Yeah, that is an interesting point. I asked Bill about that, and he said Speakon output jacks were not available for the amp head. So I decided to not worry about not having Speakons for the cabs. I personally like Speakon jacks more than 1/4" jacks, but I wasn't going to let that issue deter me from having a Reeves bass rig. I just went ahead and ordered some very high quality speaker cables with heavy duty 1/4" jacks and called it good.

Yeah, that was my initial reaction as well. I just couldn't figure out why a company that is putting out top tier gear would go with 1/4" jacks. But then I realized that Reeves is essentially turning the clock back to when really good hand wired amps were built, and all those bands back in the 60's and 70's used 1/4" jacks. So I figured if 1/4" jacks were good enough for Led Zep, they will be good enough for me.

Well, my two Reeves 1x15 bass cabs arrived today (three days sooner than expected). Bill shipped them via DB Schenker instead of the usual Fedex.

I hooked up my new Reeves Custom 225 amp to the two cabs, and plugged in my USA Lakland jazz bass, and the tone was fantastic! Very warm, fat, tube tone. The notes were very clear, and the rig seemed to "breathe" if that makes any sense. The room really shook when I turned up the "bass" knob. I am very happy with the sound of this rig! And I also really like the way it looks. A pic is below.

Thanks nysbob. And thank you (and edbass) for posting your review of the prototype cabs as that information helped me to convince myself to wait for these cabs to become available instead of buying some other brand of cabs to go with my Reeves Custom 225 amp head. I sure am glad I waited. The sound that this rig generates is, as Jeff Spicoli would put it, "awesome.....totally awesome!" :bassist:

Mine were shipped with the same carrier, and have been in NYC for two days now. I called last night and again today to find out why no one has called to deliver... they couldn't answer me straight, but promised to deliver tomorrow. I'M PISSED... their service totally blows. :scowl:

I don't know who builds them, but I do know that they aren't an "off the shelf" driver. They are cast frame and built to Reeves' specification.
I also know that Reeves did try various off the shelf drivers (which would have made production much easier, less costly and faster), but none of them were quite right for the tonal qualities that they wanted.
It's been my experience that Reeves isn't a "cut corners" operation, they realize that their gear is expensive, and as such; compromise is unacceptable.

IMO you indeed get what you pay for in most things, this gear over delivers. ;)

I'm going to have to wait on my 15" cabs for a bit now.

Having my stupid high tech alternative drain field repaired and
inspected just cost me $1250.00

The County inspector cracked up when I told him they've turned
my yard into the Space poople.

Meanwhile, back in the dungeon one of my buddies came over
to assist in the demonstration of what a Reeves 225 sounds like
with the Channels Y Jumpered.

Redco Audio made up the cable for me.



Being a hack of all trades, this amp is simply amazing!

Please post your thoughts after you get to play through them a bit.

I'm relieved that the initial reaction has been so positive - I'm not a professional tester by any stretch and it's a little scary reading that some of you have based your purchase on my posts. I have no affiliation with Reeves whatsoever, but was more than happy to answer the call when Edbass asked if I was interested in checking out the prototypes.

I have been playing for close to 40 years and used a lot of different gear over the years, so I know what I like and try to call 'em like I see 'em...but everyone hears things differently.
