New Reeves Cabs Pics (Prototype)

I've had some tough times with Fed Ex and UPS to the point where I've told the
distribution hub manager to just keep my package there and I'll pick it up rather
than wait one more day for their shipping gorillas to bounce my package around
in their trucks any longer.

I'm relieved that the initial reaction has been so positive - I'm not a professional tester by any stretch and it's a little scary reading that some of you have based your purchase on my posts. I have no affiliation with Reeves whatsoever, but was more than happy to answer the call when Edbass asked if I was interested in checking out the prototypes.

I have been playing for close to 40 years and used a lot of different gear over the years, so I know what I like and try to call 'em like I see 'em...but everyone hears things differently.

I based my decision on the fact that the cabs were directly AB'd with the OBC115 cabs, and were judged better by everyone I heard from. As I was using the Orange cabs for smaller gigs I was sold. I recently got rid of my last NV215, and will be selling my Orange cabs. I'm a longtime Hiwatt player and have been waiting to retire my vintage Hiwatt cabs, with the Reeves offering I can now do that.

Having had the chance to A/B my Reeves and Orange cabs this weekend I have to say I'm impressed! I was originally using NV215 cabs, but found them too large to handle on a regular basis... so I decided on 115 cabs. I've had the Orange cabs for ~6 months now and really like them, but the Reeves have changed all that...

The Reeves sound much tighter in the low-end, than the OBC115s which are more flabby. The low-mids are real creamy... very much like the NV215. There appears to be more high-mid content in the Reeves though, which I suspect will smooth out once broken in. I'm not sure what the break in period will turn out to be, but the speaker does sound very tight. I read that the Orange might be a bit louder, and agree with that statement. The difference is minimal, but it's there. Overall the Reeves is a very dynamic cab, and took all that I dished out without ever sounding "pushed". The driver really responds well to nuance, hand position and attack translated really well whether using a pick or finger-style. The tone knob on my US Glaub (strung w/RS66) produced more tonal variation than I've ever heard before. Rolling off the highs produced a thump that hits below the belt. The Orange by comparison is a more subdued cab, and doesn't really change character as radically. With the Reeves I never touched the EQ on my Hiwatt, as the tone knob produced all the variation needed to go from a very agressive treble tone (think Entwistle/Squire/Wetton) to a really thunderous low-end. I didn't bring either of my flat-strung basses, but can only imagine that the punch from flats would positively hurt.

I plan on sending some music through the cabs for a few days to loosen them up, and will report back. Bill hadn't commented on break-in, but I suspect ~40-50 hours should really add some sweetness to an already great cab.

Hey xsubs, thanks for posting your comments. I agree with your assessment of the tight low end and creamy-ness. I too noticed a wide range of tones just by twirling my tone knobs on my US Joe Osborne. I have not plugged in my US Bob Glaub into my Reeves rig yet, but I will do that soon.

This rig just rocks. It is a tone monster. And even though I am 53 years old and don't particularly like lifting heavy objects, I will gladly tote this rig anywhere just to have this thick lush bass tone. The Custom 225 head is 60 pounds, which isn't too bad, and the cabs feel like they are somewhere around 50-55 pounds each...not bad either.

Yes, I have. It's very much in the same vain and the 1x15, with full, yet controlled, low end, and smooth articulation, with good high-end extension. I am working on a more detailed review, so I don't want to give too much away, but it's a very, very nice cab. If you like the 1x15, I think you'll like the 4x10. :cool:

The new Mesa/Boogie Traditional Powerhouse 410 gets somewhat close (and this is a very different cab from their other PH410 models). Orange OBC410 is also in the ballpark. I still love my Reeves 410, but both the Boogie and the Orange are great options, IME/IMHO. Different flavors of good.

The Reeves cabs are very impressive, for sure. Can't go wrong with either the 115 or the 410. :bassist: :bassist: :bassist: :thumbsup:

Thanks Tom, I was hoping you would chime in again. I even like the Aggy stack better than my NV215 now - especially with the Deltalite in one cab. A lot better dispersion and clarity. I just don't have a side by side comparison with the Reeves. I read you liked the 410 better. I am leaning toward the 115 but afraid it would be a sideways move from the GS112 x 2 stack.

Happy to help! That being said, it sounds like we have at least slightly different tonal preferences, so definitely take my observations about the 115 vs 410 with a grain of salt.
