Neither of them are worth their asking prices! Just my opinion. I'll look for a bargain on a used one.

New Retro '70s StingRay

Hmmm....they'd sell a lot more if they lowered the prices. Not everyone has that kind of money to spend on a decent instrument.It’s not a rip-off if it’s not illegal and people are willing to pay that amount of money for it.
“Rip-off” may be an emotionally satisfying term, but just because it’s more than you (and I, frankly) are willing to pay doesn’t make it a rip-off.
(Yes, the semantics are running high with this one today….)
True but unfortunately, I'll never own one at that price!
If that overseas Stingray copy Pete Wentz Sterling is 1,400, 3,000 for a special edition real deal Stingray doesn't sound too bad.
There's already folks posting they put their orders in. Obviously within 24 hours they're selling.
Why would they need to lower the price? I just looked at Sweetwater and the current 2024 standard StingRay Specials are 2699. Want a lower price, buy one of those.
They are selling them cheap compared to actual 45 year old ones

I get how people want a retro bass or guitar as true to the original as possible. But I like what they did with the classic. Old school tone in a new school-ish body. If they came out with with an old school 2 bander in a Special body, tuners etc. that would catch my interest even more.
No doubt some folks are buying. And I'm happy for those who have the money to buy them.
I’m extremely happy that I picked up one of these Retro’s.
If you are on the fence, I say go for it. I tried a few Specials and just couldn’t bond with them. The Retros just sound and feel like home for me.
Nothing against the Specials as this is all subjective.

Some Thoughts and then some Pics:
Mine is a Vault only Heritage Natural finish edition of the Retro 70's Stingray.
The fit & finish is perfect. The weight is only 8.6Lb.
Big mistake on my part>>>I have always avoided slab bodies because I thought they would "Dig in" to my ribs. I can honestly say that I can't tell the difference with the Tummy cut Vs. without it. That said, I never play sitting down. I play standing up and ready for a gig at any moment.
I absolutely love the Gloss finish on the Retro 70's which is everywhere. The neck finish is gorgeous and has a very slight yellow tint.
The Hardware is also top notch and beautiful. The tuning machines move effortlessly and smoothly. The Mutes are also very usable & as you turn the thumb screw Anti-Clockwise, the spring-loaded Pad raises up to the strings. you can go extremely light if you want to just clean up your playing. Or you can go full on Thumpy Motown with them.
The tone can go from Slap to Dark & heavy and everywhere in-between. There's very little that a 2 Band Ray can't do if you're not afraid to turn some knobs.
I have been trying to get down to 4 basses and this one is definitely one of the Final 4. My other 3 are a Spector NS-2, Rick 4003 & A/O 50's P-Bass. I can use any of these 4 for my group on any gig.

Congratulations that is one beautiful looking bass you got there. I have one as well and echo what you said. It’s my favourite bass I own. One thing you should check while you are in your return window is dead spots. A few of us had issues with the Retro 70. Mainly very short sustain on the E string around frets 5-7 or G string 5-7. I returned my first Retro that had this but my new one has excellent sustain on all frets. Hopefully yours is great as well
