'new' ric is slightly broken..

No, the pictures demonstrate a problem with a particular instrument. With nothing further, that cannot be extrapolated to quality control, since there is no demonstrated pattern of problems.

If there are demonstrated patterns of problems, then it becomes a quality control issue.

Out of interest, what are your reasons for thinking this? As those pictures demonstrate to me frankly awful quality control for an instrument with that retail price.

I don't think he bought it at retail. he basically bought it at a discounted price as a used defective bass.

it's like if I go to the golf store and buy a dozen prov1 X out golf balls for 24.00 a dozen instead of 44.99 a dozen. it's marked down and sold as defective merchandise.

Think about it: Australia. No factory authorized wholesaler, unlike, say, Rosetti in the UK. This is a classic "grey market" transaction which RIC has not authorized nor has any control over, and the retail store is not going to honor, either, because it didn't come through an "authorized" channel.

According to Mr. JH, RIC has only in June of this year has appointed an authorized distributor for Australia.

This could be caused from a number of reasons.
The surface may have been contaminated with something making the paint unable to bond to the surface correctly.
These are painted with a UV cured poly so it may have actually cured too quickly or shrank too much too fast.
There's probably several more possibilities as well.

FWIW: I had a 2006 Jetglo 4003 that had a gummy-soft finish and was a catalyzed varnish of some sort (they switched to UV cured poly around 2008).
Any guitar with any finish can have trouble. It's tricky to get right, even for the top builders.

I would play the heck out of it. And probably pick at it a little 'between songs when the band leader rambling on to the audience.
It might be a botched fireglo under there which would be cool to uncover.

Forgot to add; Contact Paul W. on the Rickenbacker forum about this. He'll probably know what's up here. His handle is "jingle_jangle".

Okay, of course I absolutely don't know what products they used to make this bass, stains, paints, lacquers, etc., but one thing I do know is that SOMETIMES these things can happen Because...a water based product was put on top of an oil based product. Actually, usually this will cause peeling or flaking or crinkle-ling.

You can put an oil on top of a water based product, but results are terrible if you put a water based on top of an oil based.

Now there are really probably a lot of experimental products out there, which can cause these types of headaches.

If you see that it continues and it is only a matter of time for more to flake off, consider a re-finishing of it. But again, it is what is underneath that is the issue too. If that is an oil base per chance you will need oil based on top. Don't worry about redoing it though, a person who takes the time to put many layers of lacquer on it, and all that stuff will make it quite beautiful.

However, also, like others who posted here, the flakes could be nice and so forth. It definitely will create the illusion of a much loved bass.

Blessings to you.

Guys, I'm not jamming at Ric QC or anything, a quick search on the web shows a bunch of 2011 JG rics had this finish issue, most went back to Ric for warranty repairs.
Manufacturers have issues from time to time, I get that, yes I got it really cheap, I didn't know what the issues were at the time, but considering I got a new Ric with finish issues that plays killer and sounds great.. I'm all good!

But sure, if its isolated paint damage ill get it fixed, if its widespread ill rock the hell out of it and later get a refin.

As for the 'Australian' distributor Ric Asia, they are not an option for us, the prices are so astronomical it's cheaper to fly to the US buy one and bring it back. And seeing they are Japan based we still need to pay extra import duties, shipping and get no real warranty support. It's a mess!

Even more, contemplating this bass, why is the base (underneath the black) red and shiny? Are parts of this bass exposing the underneath red on purpose elsewhere on this bass?
If that is all black, I am guessing that it is the underneath that is the problem. For if the object was to paint it black, underneath would be probably raw wood??? At any rate, a very porous surface for the poly to adhere, yes?
Thereby, my guess is that if you ever redo this, someone will have to dissolve that red product off first as well.

But how did it get out of the factory in the first place? Surely paint shouldn't just 'flake off' like that?? I understand he got it cheaper because of the defect, but why is the defect there?

You're missing the option of it looking fine to get through QC and then the paint flaking later.

This would mean QC did do its job. It would point to a materials issue that has nothing to do with QC.

Oops.. Jumper caught on the raggedy edge..
Had a quote for a full refin.. But, I picked at the edges where it came off, it seems really solid from there on, almost like it was localised patchiness.. Maybe I can get some spot fixes which will see it through until one day I go a full refin.

This is odd. I believe the problem on many of the Jetglo basses from early/mid 2011 was a combination of an "overcooked"/brittle uv finish combined with an extremely thin coat of paint to begin with.

This one is very peculiar indeed. Every photo of a finish-cracked Jetglo I have seen has revealed bare wood (clean maple) underneath the paper thin finish. The red underneath makes me think that maybe RIC decided they needed more Jetglos and took a few basses that were in the process of being finished in Fireglo and sprayed black over them. This maybe have caused problems with bonding.
