'new' ric is slightly broken..

Somehow this has turned into a bit of a Ric bashing thread re: quality control. The OP was asking how to fix his problem. He wasn't asking if the Ric company sucks.

I guess I should find a Sting Ray thread and start complaining about how every month I have to do a set up on my Rays because of humidity changes. And can't EBMM come up with necks that aren't so susceptible to weather changes. What a PITA that is.

But I won't.

Yep, was never my intention for it to head this way.
Thanks for the info though guys!, its a killer bass, phenomenal through my GK rig, won't be going anywhere.

I am in and have been in a world class manufacturing facility for 15 years now. You make absolutely no sense when you say that a quality process is not part of quality control. And no it is not a process problem. It is a really bad QC problem. Period! And here's another problem. They obviously knew it could possibly be a defect or they wouldn't have sold them at a cheaper price than all the other technically good rics.

Do you know the price Rickenbacker sold this to the dealer? Do you know that Rickenbacker sold it cheaper than others? I doubt that you do. The dealer may have known but this doesn't mean Rickenbacker knew.

I think either you misunderstood me or I described it incorrectly.

You can have a documented process and have procedures that are not part of that process. Using this example, do you honestly believe that Rickenbacker has a paint hardening process that QC checks? Quality process is different than quality control, though they are linked. The quality process often involves the whole company while there are specific people involved only in QC.

That's what Im talking about.

OP, I'm sorry that your Ricky is flaky. If you're gonna let it be, maybe get a red pickguard? I think it could complete the look.

The rest of you: every time I check out a Ric thread, it's the same crap. Someone says a generalization that pisses the fanboys off, the haters chime in, and it starts a flame war. Haters says Ric has QC problems, fanboys say "Why don't I go complain about (insert brand here) in a (insert brand here) thread?" You don't get any more immature than this - but of course, it's the internet.

Haters should respect that the loyalists like their instruments. Loyalists should respect the non-loyalists for not liking an instrument they find sub-par. In the end, remember, no matter what anyone says, it's a (pretty) piece of wood with wires and a logo! Can't you have a civil conversation about Rickenbacker? For ONCE?

Well, interesting continuation of this..

After the top chunk came off when it caught on my jumper.. I was curious to see how stable the red (possibly fireglo) finish was.

A piece of damp toweling... Yup, colour comes right off.

+1. Bargain prices are cool, but there is often a reason why something is a bargain. With a Level 3 transaction, RIC has no liability for a peeling finish. If MF stated it was used or level 3 then they have no liability unless the bass was busted when you received it.

I'm not looking for liability.. I'm not looking for someone to fix it..

John Hall saw this bass on another forum.

John Hall:
"We DO NOT overspray, ever! If we refinish an instrument, we use a combination of sanding and scraping to remove the finish to bare wood and start the refinishing process from the sealer up.

As such, this instrument was refinished by someone outside of our factory, period."

Charging $2000+ for a bass with defective paint is poor business. General Motors has had several paint recalls and lawsuits brought against them concerning paint defects and faulty paint procedures. Rickenbacker should fix the issues and we as consumers should hold them accountable until they do.

The voice of reason.

For the sake of discussion, even if this does constitute a QC issue, that doesn't mean Ric has a QC problem, at least not any moreso than virtually any company manufacturing and selling anything.

Not until you can show me a verifiable percentage of Rics that have issues versus those that don't can you say Ric has a QC "problem."

It may very well be a refinished bass. Jetglo's don't normally come with red "primer"; that may be the main reason why the black finish is coming off in such big pieces. Personally, I would peel as much off as I could, so it doesn't come off on stage, and just play the snot out of it. Also, start saving up to have it refinished right - or do it yourself. I have a beat up Rick 330 Fireglo that will soon be a lefty Mapleburst, once I get all the stuff I need from ReRanch. Ricks arent' really any harder to refinish than anything else; people do it all the time.

Music Man, Carvin and Fender are made in California.

I'm not sure either. There are two threads on that particular forum that might be dedicated to this bass. One of the threads has pictures of it. The other one mentions that phrase by the thread's author.

Musicians friend sell 'used' (I use that term loosely as most if their used stock is really scratch and dent) as either L1-L4, one being new, four being needs repair.

In this case it was what appears to be a new Ric (no marks, no wear, factory strings etc) but with peeling paint.

And again.. I'm noooot looking for liability or warranty support, I bought it knowing there would be SOME issue with it, my original posts were asking how to fix it. I'm not bashing Ric I'm not bashing their products.

I am not sure why you quoted me. I do not see what I wrote has to do with what Mr. Hall had to say.
I was responding to the post blaming it on C.A.R.B. and California laws.
I have not posted one way or the other in this thread. I just call BS when I see it.

I do find it very amusing when fan boys take threads from here and bring them to the private forums to "discuss"
Rickenbacker & EBMM come to mind....
