New Rickenbacker 4004 cii

Beautiful. My '08 4004Cii is trans green, and almost as nice as the wood on this one. The modern Ric bass is not only a thing of beauty, but the best playing Ric bass ever. Mine's tuned D standard with the 4 strings= best deep growling tone ever.

What was it wired at the factory?

These things are awesome, but I can't help thinking a Ric with no pickguard looks naked, somehow. But it wouldn't look right with the huge 4001/4003 guard on it, either; would have to be something unique to this model. And that wood is awesome. Did I use the word awesome? Because this is awesome.

From the factory it is wired toggle, volume, tone. So a lot of 4004 owners will rewire it vvt or toggle and 2 stacked pots like this one here.

I agree. I would classify those strings as rounds, not flats. The core is the same as a roundwound string and the nylon wraps are much more rounded than any other tapewound I've tried.

The have a flat surface and they have a flat sound so I call them flats. The main problem with tapewound strings is they are no good for slap.

Wow,Jeff, that is a stunning bass! Will you be changing out the pickups for the 5 string conversion? I'd like to try a set of tapewounds on my Cii,it currently as flats that sound great with a pick.Congrats on your purchase!

I have some bridges that will work with the existing pickups ... So I may go that route.

If I were going to get a 4004 I think I'd rewire it with stacked knobs like the lovely bass in this picture.

Haven't tried a 4004 yet, even though I want to, as I suspect it might be a bad idea to do so at a time when I definitely can't afford another Rickenbacker.

I got a new bass. a 2001 Rickenbacker 4004cii. It is a very cool bass. It will end up a 5 string bass. It came strung with flats. I rewired it Vol, Vol, Tone.

I know a lot of people here love the p-bass with flats. Well this bass with flats outdoes the p-bass for sweet low end growl. You p-bass lovers should look at the 4004 basses.

Here's some pics.

Oh ya ... the flame on this bass is over the top!

OH my GOD, please don't make this stunning bass into a 5 string, PLEASEEEEEEEEEE, it's fine the way it is.
Can't you just make it BEAD or something like that instead of drilling into the head stock.
Man that is one of the nicest 4004cii I have seen, I really wish you would reconsider from making it a 5 string.

Ric5, unlike myself, I think often needs both the low B string and the G, so for him, a five string bass is really the optimal solution. For me, a BEAD tuned bass is fine whenever I need a low B.

Given that he's converted several before and kept them looking quite good and not "hacked up," I don't think it will look any less nice after the mod.

I really don't have much interest in preserving a Rickenbacker stock for a collector.

If you like the bass that much then offer me more than I paid for it.

To me it is just another piece of wood ... it is a tool to use to play music. My tools need 5 strings.

there are a bunch of these 4004 basses that are stock on ebay all the time and the only way they sell is when people drop the price. The 4004 is a good bass but it begs to be modifed. It is too one dimensional when it is stock.

It really is fun drilling holes in the headstock of a Rick.

that's a killer looking bass. will look even better with 5 strings. this wouldn't happen to be the ric website 4004 you almost got stoned for is it?

Nope ... But it is very similar ... except this one has a better neck. Also it is 12 years old and it was actually played. It wasn't stuck in the case and worshipped by a collector. This one has some miles on it but it was also taken care of.

It could use a good wax job with scratch-x and zymol, and I think I will oil finish the fretboard. It would make someone a a good D standard tuned 4 string bass. You know ... If bass players were smart they would quit tuning EADG and tune DGCF and for that matter the electric and acoustic guitar should also tune D standard.
