Double Bass New Rig

OK, where to start? Well, here goes. In my work as a gigging bassist it's only occasionally when I get the luxury of FOH. Often individual players bring their own combos along, or even if there is some PA I get told 'oh, the bass doesn't go through this'. I have previously played bigger stages when the bass sound has been a joy, but not so much now. I like mics for air and that near-bass sound but I also like a pup blended in for a bit of bite.

So this rig may look a bit busy but it does it all for me and it's very easily transportable and simple to set up. I run a pup channel and a mic channel separately through two Puma 500 amps working in this case simply as main amps. I'm sure others will do but I happen to have these amps to hand. Two separate signal paths controlled by a Felix, which is becoming better known on TB. The pup channel goes through the Barefaced OneTen cab behind me while the mic channel goes through a Wizzy 10 which I place on the front of the stage or playing area. No speaker pole needed. I use the ATM 350 which I actually prefer to other similar condensers. And in that position there is no feedback.

The whole rig is 30" tall and the rack, amps, Felix and wires pack into a gig bag, leaving two small speakers and a bass to carry in.

Looks neat, Roger. I'm curious-- what advantage do you find in having the mic and pup running through different amps and cabs as opposed to a single set? Oh, and where's that fdeck? :)

Ha, thought you'd ask about that, Les. I've got two pub gigs next week and I'll be taking my Genz 10" combo. The FDeck will slide in under the carry handle very nicely. Have you got the clips? Pl PM me if not.

Re my new rig, the second channel is a separate quasi FOH, or a FOS (front of stage). No feedback and good dispersion into the audience. I'm trying out the Barefaced and if it is too dark and bottom, which it can be, hence the rack/stand, I'll use a Crazy 8. The Wizzy works well FOH/FOS because it is quite middly, which is what a mic needs.

That's a very nice rig Rodger. While using two Tecamp Puma 500's essentially as power amps, might seem a bit unusual, they are the best form/factor unit's on the market that aren't botique power amps like either the Demeter Minnie 800D (which apparently has noise issues, stemming from their cooking fans) or the Jule M700 which is great, but larger in size and costs nearly three times what a Puma 500 does. Kudos.

Because I don't have a stereo power amp, although one would seem the way to go. But I was already using a Puma 500 and there was not a lot of expense in getting a second one. Also, Rick draws attention to the low form factor. Using a compact speaker I wanted to keep the whole rig compact, related to the speaker width and lightweight. I'm not sure there are too many stereo power amps that don't go a whole rack width.

But, having established the principle there are plenty of options out there. Many ways of skinning a cat.

How much does the case with two amps weigh? Interesting set up, like a mini PA. Very nice!

The stand/rack and two Pumas weigh 15 lbs. The stand is a prototype and I reckon I could take off up to four pounds on a second model. There is a Warwick Rockbag that suits a GK MBE150 that takes the rack including two amps and the Felix. All up weight is 18 lbs, plus a bit for wires and bag itself. So it's all very do-able. As you say MR PC, it makes a nice mini PA/backline all controllable from behind the bass thanks to Felix's awesome capabilities.

Sorry for the red herring. I'm sending Les a couple of clips that I make for attaching the pickup jack to the tailpiece. But they have got a bit delayed in the post. Here is a thumbnail.View attachment 772492

Oh cool that you make those. They are impossible to find for sale. Lando has them in Germany but I don't think there is an easy/cheap way to get them in North America

Love the rig btw. I bet it sounds great with such high quality components
