Everything looks good, bold choice on top and color Jerry, which is something of which we at the shop will approve of. Bold is good.

Your choices for fingerboard and nut...diamondwood is nice, I have it on both of my basses, and we can find something that will work well color wise. It's a good upgrade, IMO, for this one. Ebony...well...color-wise, a definite WIN with orange. However, there's something about wenge on a wenge neck, with a maple veneer between the neck and fingerboard, and that chocolate color will look STUNNING against orange...I'd vote for wenge on the fingerboard myself - but it's not MY bass, so we do what the orderform says....

Otherwise, I wouldn't change a thing at all - great stuff Jerry!

Gard, the icing may be sarcasm, but the cake is all layers of adulation and admiration, baby. :D Seriously - it's a way of saying, "Don't do that!" without actually saying it...it's an art form and you're Picasso. (Side note....Ed's got the gift too...another reason I get the sense that the two of you are eerily alike. "Hmmm, yeah you could do that..." is akin to, "Hmmm, are you that special a breed of stupid?" and is a tell-tale sign to consider other options.

Anyway, could you give your take on the difference(s) in sound between wenge and ebony? I'm not well-versed in wenge as a fingerboard wood, so I could definitely use the edumacation.

Wenge: slight "bump" in the midrange, smooth highs.

Ebony: slightly edgy/bright, tight lows, "flat" in the mids.

The difference is pretty minimal, considering that it is a fingerboard wood, and that is a pretty small slice of the "tonal pie" over all.

Also, frankly, I just TRUST wenge over ebony for stability. Once it's finished, it does not change...the same cannot be said for ebony, IME.

Add to that the "coolness factor" of the wenge neck with a veneer of maple separating it from the wenge fingerboard...

If you were actually the end customer for this bass, I would feel compelled to inform you that Wenge is a $60 fretboard, and Ebony is a $225 fretboard. Makes no nevermind to me, I'm a fool for Ebony. Sure, it'll crack if you don't take care of it. But if that happens, it's shame on you, not shame on Ebony (in my book, anyway). All ya gotta do is throw some lemon oil on there every time you change your strings...

But Gard is absolutely right, a Wenge board on a Wenge wedge neck just looks awesome.

How's that for playing it right down the middle? Totally your call, Jerry. No bad choices, just choices.

Heh, thanks! Let me know if you want to do one somewhere down the line. Nobody else has jumped in line yet. I should be able to let someone design one every couple months or so, and I'll just keep a list of who wants to do it. First come, first serve.

I'd love to try it, but I don't have the cajones to put someone else's cash on the line.

That prism top is completely insane!! Hadn't seen that one.

The Experiment Number 1 bass sounds great! I'd have chosen an oiled or clear top, and probably a different preamp, but otherwise you're right on the mark (love ebony fingerboards - marked for life by starting on a string bass).

Someone will be lining up their nickles for that one before Keith's team even begins, I'm sure.
