New Rush thread

I dig the album for the most part - especially "Far Cry," "Armor & Sword," "The Larger Bowl," "Spindrift," "Malignant Narcissism" and "We Hold On."

Still, some of these songs wouldn't be out of place on a Willie Nelson album! From some of these tunes, I get a mental image of Geddy and Alex sitting in a big empty field, smoking doobie after doobie, just strumming their acoustics. :p

As for songs I'm not too keen on yet, "Workin' Them Angels," "The Way The Wind Blows," "Faithless" and "Bravest Face." The other few are still growing on me, but I'm surprised to see how many of you guys like "The Main Monkey Business"! I probably haven't given it enough listens yet, but I don't really like the vibe, and IMO it goes for about 2 more minutes than it should. Still, I'll give it some time and I hope it'll grow on me.

At this (very early) point, I'll give it a 3.5/5

A few awesome songs, but it could use a shot of prog if you ask me. Is Alex afraid to just rip out a solo anymore? But still better than any other old band (70's-80's) coming out with new music. "Main monkey business" and "Malignant narcissism" and "Spindrift" are the best tunes.

I do miss the days of Alex just tearing it up full-force. Like the solo in La Villa Strangiato.

But you're certainly correct about the other "older bands" thing.

I absolutely love this album. There's a certain lushness and maturity to this album that I've never heard from Rush before.

There are a lot of nuances to discover with repeated listenings.

And yep, that's a fretless in MalNar. Geddy said in an interview on Q107 that it's a Fender Jaco Pastorius model.

The reason its a Jaco is probaly becouse geddy said to Fender "I want a fretless" and they gave it to him.. :p

I love this album. i have comed to learn that everything thats played by Rush, by Geddy especially (i have his solo album, it have the same vibe..) always turns out realy good, its like they cant make bad music, i sometime hear a rush tune and think "If any other band tried to play this, it wouldnt be good at all, but this sounds amazing!"

I guess we can just say that rush have the "IT"

Rather than copying and pasting what I wrote in my blog, I'll point to the link in my sig.

Short version: I am digging this CD. Best Rush in many many moons. I've been a fan for 22 years or so (first new release after becoming a fan was Presto, I think). Anyway, I am so happy to say that from front to back, this is the best new Rush release I've had the pleasure to listen to. (Did that make sense???)

Long live Rush!!
