New Rush thread

In an earlier post someone mentioned that Rush wanted to do the perfect album before they quit. I have been thinking about this and can't help wondering if Moving Pictures could be that album. Sure it's 20+ years old but they were doing what they could at the time. Snakes and Arrows will be older one day and so will the technology used to record it. Just some thoughts.

I'm going to get it on my break tomorrow.

I'm still trying to get a handle on it - not as angry musically as Vapor Trails (which I think is one of their best).

Lyrically I'm intrigued - my first few listens have been with distractions (driving, work, etc.). I'm just listening now - no multitasking.

Just glad for a new album . . .

I usually only stick to the DB threads, but since the only thing I listen to besides classical is Pink Floyd and Rush, I couldn't help comment after getting the admittedly amazing album.

I must admit I prefer their old sound from the 70's and 80's to their new sound, but that doesn't make this release any less fantastic. It's no 2112, but it's certainly going to be playing in my car for the rest of the month, that's for sure. I've only listened to about half at this point, but based on what I've heard so far, I like "The Main Monkey Business" and especially "The Way the Wind Blows" best, I found they most captured the "old Rush sound" I love so much.

I'm still in the process of listening to various songs for the second time (individually now, since the whole thing in one go is kind of overwhelming). Thus far my feelings are kind of mixed. Some very beautiful moments alongside other things that don't seem quite interesting enough to get dragged out as long as they do.

"Armor and Sword" is a beautiful track - the chorus on that one has been stuck in my head for the last two days. "Bravest Face" is a neat departure - that was another one that stuck in my head after the first listen because it was different. "Malignant Narcissism" was a bit of a letdown for me, on the other hand - after reading Neil's bio and awaiting Geddy's fretless debut, I was expecting more...he really didn't use the fretless to bring any noticeably different sound into the picture and is just playing it the same way he would play fretted.

Like I said, though, I haven't had enough time with this CD to have anything but a few random observations. Need more listens to digest...

I got it today and am really impressed. I will be able to have an uninterrupted listen in the morning. Today it was only in my car (very distracting) but there is some really great sounding stuff going on. More in the morning.

Okay...I'll be the dissenting voice here...but, that's after only two listens...

Yeah, there are a few highlights (names don't come to me, except Far Cry, which took several listens before it grew on me), but I'm totally annoyed with Geddy's over-use of that flamenco-style, lack of punch, pull-out-all-the-mids tone of his. I'm also annoyed with the droning sound, particularly on the first song (don't know the name), and the layered lyrics in verses. It's almost impossible to tell the difference between the verse and chorus, not to mention the bridge (and because it's Rush, a second bridge).

I've been a big Rush fan for decades, seen them over a dozen times, on every tour since Power Windows (sometimes more than once), and I'm bored with 'em.

I will say, however, the mix is certainly better than the mud-soup we heard on Vapor Trails.

To me, Test for Echo was okay, but Counterparts was the last great album (NOT CD you younguns) they recorded.

But, this is, of course, IMO.

Yeah, I wouldn't put Snakes in their top 5 albums... Still beats the pants off of a lot of the stuff out there...
