I am definitely using the MP40 - I think it sounds great with the Ric, enhancing it while letting the sound of the instrument through

Another one - trying to celebrate Signals, with the help of Signals beer - Moving Pictures was the peak IMO, but Signals is an extension of the plateau - great sounds, great songs.



The output jack on this bass needs to be looked at - no more 4001 for a while...

Here's a short one (though I'm going to post a shorter Short tomorrow) - I was a huge Rush fan starting about 1985 - I felt like I had missed the boat - Grace Under Pressure was the latest album when I got into them and Power Windows was the first one I bought when it came out - it seemed like the era of Moving Pictures and Signals was long over, but in hindsight it had only been a few years! These are the sounds I loved, it's fun to revisit them and the MP40 helps a lot, as does the 4001!



I want to tackle New World Man next - it's deceptively simple!

Finally did New World Man! Realized that Geddy seems to have chorus on his bass - the only chorus I have is an obscure Japanese one by Vizion called the Lucifer - worked pretty well if I do say so myself:



Deceptively simple, not without flubs, but fun to play! Just 4001 into MP40 into Vizion Lucifer chorus.

Enjoyed reading Geezer Butler's new memoir - this is really foundational music for me - I don't think I tried to play this when I was learning, but this album was key in turning me on to bass. There's a little bass solo at the end if you want to hear the bass just with drums - I'm only using the P pickup, just going through the MP40. It's actually two takes - I had fun stitching them together - related to the lyrics!

I want my P bass to sound like that. I have an American Ultra Precision and it doesn't sound like a P bass to me. I even replaced the P pickup with a 1/4lb pickup which helped a bit but still not what I was looking for.

Isn't it weird? How can a P pickup not sound like a P?!! I wonder if it's not a hotter pickup you want than a more evenly-wound one, so that you get a more even frequency response that you can then EQ. The Alembic Activators in mine are not really like a P pickup (except the shape?) but with the low-pass filter you can emphasize a frequency and yet still let the sound of the instrument through. I kind of want to do this song again but with my Duck Dunn Sig P, which is a passive MIJ pickup (I think - they just call it a "vintage P-Bass pickup" in the literature).

Another video, but different than what I've been posting, for two reasons: 1) it's an original instead of a bass cover, and 2) only the bridge pickup is going through the MP40 (and drive channel only at that) - I'm running my bass in glorious Rick-O-Sound!



Maybe time to get a YYZ? But seriously, I am going to try and get my 4001 fixed so I can use either the mono or Rick-O-Sound output - my mono output jack is scratchy and partially cuts out occasionally...

He's 70 so I thought it would be fun to play some Rush riffs that are in 7. Still haven't had my 4001 worked on (problem with the jack) so used my Rick-O-Sound box and just the bridge pickup thru the MP40.

I like to think I'm getting a nice P-Bass sound with the Alembic Activators (with a little J mixed in?).

One thing I did realize is that I've had the "tight" switch on! I never would have guessed, I remember preferring with it off. But I like the sounds I've been getting with it on, and think it's probably more realistic for live too - the bottom end feels pretty fat, but without overpowering the mids and highs. The Mix knob is really powerful - I love being able to dial in just the right amount of lows, or dial them back, depending on the bass, technique, etc. Sometimes I realize that it sounds too thin and trebly, then I'm like, MIX KNOB! and BAM!!! Sounds so good! lol

Trying to ride the balance between thwacking the strings against the frets and pulling enough for some fat bottom, without upsetting the delicate nature of the fat lower short scale strings (B & E) - let me know what you think!

Finally broke down and bought an all original 1975 P-Bass. Got that sound I was looking for in the Ultra.
