New Sting Pickguard! Whaddya think?

Thanks much MammaryVest- best part is, it plays GREAT! What more can you ask for?

Y'know, the cosmetics of any instrument is so subjective. I do understand the visual aspect, and I get why Orpheus55 is asking, but when you close your eyes and listen they can look like anything and it doesn't matter.

That said, and since Orpheus55 asked, the combination of the tobacco burst and black pearloid is a little jarring to me. Best of luck in both harvesting the feedback and deciding on the look!

I'm with your wife on this one. Black pearloid and tobacco burst is a little incongruous for me as well.

BUT, if it's your thing, why change it? It would be a boring world if everyone played all the same bass parts.. The same would be true if basses were all the same brand and model and color.

In the grand scheme of things, what other TBers think (especially me) really doesn't matter at all. Now the wife is a different story...

I'm not appalled. I'm happy for you. Beauty is in the eye of the
beholder. I'd say if you like it, it's good. The bass sounds the same and
isn't altered in any permanent way. So should you decide to sell it, you
can return it to original condition, right?

I admit I am a wee bit of a purist when it comes to my '55. But
remember, mine was first spray-painted pink over the original tobacco
finish, then stripped to the bare wood, heavily sanded, and THEN
slathered with saggy brushed on polyurethane, which is how it was
when I got it. To add to that, the grain of the wood was unsealed, so
sweat, dirt, beer, cigarette ashes, etc. were working their way into the
wood. :eyebrow:

I was very lucky, though. The bass came to me with the bridge cover
and, oh yes, the original white pickguard. Here are a before and after
pair of pics....

I'm going to get a vintage white one (clear with a painted back) that Tony at Pickguardian does for my '51 reissue.

You can't see any electronics with the guard off but you can see a route. Have a look at the P with the darkstar above and you can see it through the clear guard. You could maybe hide it with a finger rest

Yeah, going with clear guard did bring up the issue of the visible route. Someone out there is gonna gag when I describe how I dealt with it. I put a chunk of foam in there, covered by a small piece of fuzzy black fabric my wife had. It's subtle, but it does look a bit like a black caterpillar. I think it's kinda funny.

Thanks Jim; incredible job you've done there. As for mine, I just got a little adventurous; it really does look better live, but basic one-ply black--which I can get for $30--is probably the way to go. Of course, I still have the original. BTW, a fellow TBer had the pearloid white, which I respected but didn't personally care for, and I know WDmusic could make a customized tort for biggish bucks. I am grateful for all the opinions, even if they confirm my, uh, suspect taste. Onward! I will post the improved version soon! Happy fathers day to all!
