I had bought a Squier from a buddy over a year ago. It was one he had found in a pawn shop, fixed it up, new pickguard, Schaller strap locks, new strings, straightened neck, fixed wiring, all for $100... it played and sounded great.
I had bought it just for a backup/practice bass, but liked it so much I started leaving my more expensive basses at home.
I asked what strings he used because they held their tone after a lot of playing... Dunlop super bright nickels. They are smooth, easy on the fingers, not too bright but right where I like them.
I asked my friend if I got a set if he'd do a set up on my other basses, I said I'd pay him of course. I would've attempted it but I wanted it exactly like that and I'm apt to mess it up.
Dropped off my Precision Elite, Ibanez SR2600, and the 45-105 strings to him last night, told him to take his time... he texted me today saying he had them done.
When I went to pick them up he had gotten them exactly like I wanted.
Such a great guy when I tried to pay him he wouldn't take it.
I own him a big favor.
I've never been good at set ups but I'm going to get him to teach me how HE does it. Perfect action and no buzz... I've had luthiers who could get it right.
I couldn't be happier... I'm very pleased with these new strings and the awesome set up!
