New strings breaking

I've been playing a ton so I've been changing strings a lot more than ever. Out of the last 10 string changes, I've broken 4 d or g strings. When they're almost to pitch I hear a little snap. It appears that they're breaking around the tuner peg. I cannot see the break. The bass is an EBMM classic 5 and the strings are Dunlop super bright stainless. I've been playing for almost 30 years and I'm baffled.

Very common. Sharp edge on the tuning posts is to blame. Not all string types break though.

Without notification to the tuning post.... Make sure you are wrapping as much string as possible around the post. Try to have as little bend possible where the string comes out of the slot. You call also use a little piece of old string as a buffer between the edge of the post and the string.

There have been posts/threads by other players using "The bass is an EBMM classic 5" that had the same problem. Something to do with the tuner slot design that causes strings to break.
Maybe search it up for a solution?

I'm using Dunlop Superbrights which don't have silk at all.. just wound all the way to the end. I'm going to try to file the sharp edges of the tuning post and see if that works..

Was hoping there could be something to be gleaned from that thread- didn't read all the way thru it, tho.
Seems that if there are not enough windings on the post (and that the chrome on the post is hard/slippery), that the strings don't grab it well, putting too much strain on the string at the edge of the slot. I always have at least 3 full wraps, usually 4, and more on the smaller strings, but don't have a MM, tho.
There's another method of winding that may help- after the string comes out of the tuner slot, go one wrap over (up), then the rest of the wraps to the bottom of the post- that one wrap has to cross over and locks them better.
One of the threads or comments mentioned that some of the posts (different models/years?) were sharper at the edge of the slot than others, some were a little more rounded.
