Sometimes it is better to re-purpose items than to recycle. I find the strings make an excellent garrote.

Many (most?) of us have scavengers that wander our neighborhood on trash day. If you're putting something else that's metal out, tie your used strings to that - they will happily take your strings, and they will get recycled that way.

I remember their old points program. I actually maxxed it out because I was going through so many strings. I got lots of swag. Then they canceled the program. Currently I have an entire milk crate of old strings. I'm totally shipping it to them in return for points with this new program.Playback | String Recycling Program

Actually, almost all ferrous or aluminum metals are recycled: separated out, run through furnaces and cast into ingots, pressed out into rolls, you name it. VERY little is wasted or thrown away. Your car and a lot of metal-based products contain recycled metal, and it's a big business. I worked for a Tier 2 auto parts manufacturer, worldwide producing transmission parts for ZF, GM, and many others. Our production press process left a certain percentage scrap which was all sold: Some months we made more money on the scrap, and those kind of numbers guarantee a strong reliance on recycling.
Won't make anything on old strings, but if you throw them over the fence at a metal recycler, they won't be wasted or buried in a landfill.

I guarantee you have some dude nearby (let’s be honest, it’s always a dude) with the means to scrap and reuse just about any metal of which you’d like to dispose. He’s also the guy with a 3d printer. You can spot him by the industrial sculpture garden in his front yard. Make friends with him; I guarantee he is a very chill bro.

I actually used one E string to hang one of those industrial-looking ceiling lightings in my dining room
