Double Bass New strings... or not

I've been noticing lately that my EP Weich are sounding a little dull. They're a little over a year old and I've been thinking about whether I want to get another set of EPs or try something else out. New EPs have a real PING at the front of the note and that accentuated attack sounds great on my old Kay and I miss it now that it's faded.

Last night I was reviewing old string threads here on TB and looking at Bob Gollihur's site trying to decide what to order.

After a while, I ordered myself downstairs and practiced for about an hour, playing whole notes and really focussing on my tone.

*Sigh* It's not as much fun as buying new strings, but it'll sound better in the long run! :)

I'm in the same boat with my EPs. I'm just trying to forget about it. I've been thinking about trying my first set of Spiros (Used Helicores previously). I'm gonna go do the Aebersold workshop next week. Maybe some exposure to some different setups will help me to figure out what to do going forward.

Try giving your strings a deep cleaning as described here.

It's like having a new set of strings, but they are already broken in.

Interesting. Might look into this.

I also took a good look at my setup and found part of my problem: When A. Schnitzer did a fairly major overhaul on my bass about a year ago, he made me a handy-dandy little gauge to check the angle of my bridge... which I promptly forgot about. I dug it out the other day and found that the bridge, with tuning, had crept quite a bit toward the neck. Popping it back into place improved playability immediately and also improved the tone (which really doesn't come as much of a surprise :hmm: ). The strings are still less lively than they were when new, but some of the *ping* came back with the adjustment.

That, plus some focussed attention to my right hand technique, which is also yielding some results, has put off a desire for new strings for a while.
