New to HX Stomp

During this period of Social Distancing, I'm getting to do a lot of practicing and working on Bass stuff in general. I just got an HX Stomp and am in the "going down the rabbit hole" phase of exploring the possibilities.

Looking to talk to other players who are using one. I'm looking for good clean tone presets, and general favorites in effects (octave pedal, delays, reverb, etc.) that people are using. I going to be using mine for at home practice with headphones and as an all in one rig for gigs when we can get back to them someday. Thanks!

Here is what my rig looks like. I use a Boss FS7 switch to toggle the snapshots. up and down. Playing live I have really only use 2 snapshots ( so far). The snapshot I use most has a nice clean sound in the 1st preset, the 2nd has a bit more grit and the 3d has an octave activated.
The next snapshot down has a slightly aggressive sound in preset 1 and the 2nd and 3rd get progressively grittier.
I recorded a couple tracks is a small studio and used a comp>amp>cab into a DI. Sounded great.

On thing to remember on helix is that you don’t have to have a traditional signal chain. So you can use a pre-amp direct in to a speaker cab, for example. My go-to on helix is the Obsidian 7000 (Darkglass B7k) into a 3sigma Markbass 410HF IR. You can also put a volume pedal after the cab if you want to control volume without changing your tone. For adding other effects like distortion and wah, it can help to add a split crossover, and send some bass tone around the effect. It can help to keep ypur distortion tones from loosing all the bottom end

It's a pretty basic patch, Using a low/high cut at 40Hz/7kHz, a split at 500Hz to the distortion pedal (Teemah!), then to the Obsidian 7k, the IR, and a volume block connected to and expression pedal.

Here's the patch file if you want to just import. You'll need to either find a suitable IR or replace the IR with one of the Helix built in cabinets if you import this. It's a bit of a work in progress, but it should give you a good starting point

The Stomp is great for bass ! Here’s my setup.
I’m using some analog drive pedals into the stomp where I use Amp Sim usually the Ampeg SVT or SVT 4 or GK with some 3 party IR’s. The celestion IR are good as well as I really dig the Lancaster Audio ones and the ownhammer ones.
I also love the 70’s chorus in the stomp and if I’m not using outboard drives the b7 model and the clawthorn drive are fantastic.

Thanks! Will try it out.

Thanks, the stomp has been a lot of fun so far. An improvement over my old trusty B3, and great for my limited guitar playing as well.

Social Distancing also led to a "jamming at home" buying spree. Also ended up with a HX Stomp.

But I bought it with the specific task in mind to replace my Helix LT when I commute 3h and do not want to carry the big thing around.

My two cents for beginners:
- do not use the Soft Gate as an extra Block. It is included in the "Input" block, so do not waste a block on that!
- Definitively check out the "Obsidian 7000" distortion block, but with the "distortion" setting to "off". It's a great preamp for some sounds.
- The splitting block set to "crossover" and using it to seperate bottom end and grit is a great tool.
- You can use a cheap 2-footswitch pedal with TRS-cable to extend your amount of footswitches.
- If you use a volume pedal in front of the HX Stomp, you save a block :)

I've got a compressor pedal I really like on the stomp input, block saved in most cases. A lot of compressor plugins have preamp circuit emulation built in and do more than just dynamics. I wonder if the Line 6 models do that???

I hope this isn't too ressurecty, but which compressor and what settings?

bonus points: any idea what I'd have to do to the 3 band compressor to make it act like the Spectracomp on the RH450 head by TC Electronic?

It's not really easy to find the default settings for the spectracomp build in the amps.

For the spectracomps floor pedals, it might be possible - but I couldn't find them right away. However, the spectracomp pedals are more complex, as you can set everything via USB. So finding 'the spectracomp' settings is not so easy.

Instead of trying to copy the spectracomp you have try to learn what an multiband compressor actually does. Maybe you can use that knowledge to 1) understand what your spectracomp does, 2) even improve your sound beyond the sound of that thing build in the TC and 3) be able to use the HX-block without having one singular effect in mind.

You'll be more flexible! :)

Quick google search gave me this:

It's a starting point!

my search might have been too narrow and "tunnel vision", and I'm always grateful to learn new things, or to try to, anyway, so thank you enormously for both the suggestion and the links

Hey Ed! Are you still digging the HX Stomp ? I have one in bound. I'm planning on doing a little programming on it and use it o replace my Bassbone and to manage my synth pedals (C4 and Future Impact in independent efx loops.

Hoping the modulation amd eq sections are strong.

I've been doing a lot of midi programming (well writing macro's really) with the Source Audio stuff and the FI.

Best to you and your lady!

I'm gonna resurrect this thread just to say thank you for that Obsidian 7000 tip. It reminds me of my old Darkglass Vintage Deluxe. I'd always have it on because I loved the preamp sound.
