Hello bassists,
As the title already says I am totally new to all this. My girlfriend is a music teacher for piano and flute and wanted to get into cello playing, so I got her one. Now I am totally fascinated by strings and would really like to play one too, but rather than a cello I would prefer a double bass, mainly for the reason of variability (since as far as I know you can use different techniques to play rock, jazz or classic) - but again, I am very new to this.
Just as a note: I can read music notes and all that, since I have been playing an instrument for about 6 years, even though it's a totally different one (recorder), but that's a long time ago.
So now I have some questions and I am sorry if they are answered in one of the mega-stickies, which I'll have a look through asap;
It's now about buying a double bass. I think an electric one would be preferable, for transportability, practice (headphones) but mainly price. I was looking through ebay and found one from china, but I am afraid it's not a very good one, especially after seeing its "locking mechanism" (it's a foldable one). I am not sure what's the policy about posting ebay links, so I will not post it for now.
What is your recommendation about a beginner EUB? And also: Is there any difference between 3/4 and 4/4 EUBs, other than the size? And if so, which one would be better? From browsing the net a bit I found that most EUBs are 3/4.
Again - sorry if these questions seem stupid, but as I was saying I am an absolute beginner on strings and all this.

About the size: I am 6'2''/187cm, so would I still get a 3/4? And this might be a really ridiculous question but: Do 3/4 and 4/4 sound the same (i.e. have the same range)? Because I'd imagine since it has shorter strings it's higher than a 4/4...
