Double Bass New Upton Day

... I hope to be able to own an Upton some day. Right now I am going to pickup my new Englehardt. I will post picts when I get home.:D

Cool. My coming Upton hybrid will be an addition to my 10-yr old Engle. A lot of folk around here say less than wonderful things about Engles, but I've never understood why. W/ the proper set-up and now w/ gut strings, I'm loving how my Engle plays and sounds.

Just put Spiro Mitt on the new bass to replace Evah Weich. REALLY liking the sound even more now. I wasn't feeling the Evah's but also have been used to medium tension lately so maybe am just more used to that feel. The Spiros bow beautifully, and this is a worn in set and not new. The response to the bow is variable and dynamic, compared to a flatter response on the Evah. More musical.

Bass is settling in nicely, and the Spiros sound great. This bass is much darker than my other, so the Spiros are actually a perfect fit. This bass is really motivating me to get my arco chops in order and has kind of changed the way i play. Suddenly i am leaning the bass way back and getting my left hand into fighting shape. My technique had gotten gotten away from me this year due to all the rabbit holes i was heading down with regards to positioning the bass while standing, mainly holding the bass more so straight up and bringing my body to it. Now i am back to keeping my body straight up and bringing the bass to it, which i used to do and not sure why i moved away from it. End pin is now jacked sky high to accommodate the lean. Feels right.
