New Vox Basses

I do like to crank my basses but I understand that this is low
power. If it can sound fine next to an acoustic guitar, I'll be
happy with that. I think you indicated that this was the case.
I find that many acoustic bass guitars cannot compete
with acoustic guitars; I'm hoping it is better than an acoustic
bass guitar.

I got the black phantom style on ebay. I didn't even realize
it was black as the black area was barely visible in the picture.
I emailed the seller and asked him if he had black thinking that
I was looking for a different model. He responded, "Yeah, it's black." :p

My new black phantom-style Vox bass guitar arrived today.
My wife texted me a picture of a Fender box (apparently, they
packed it in a Fender box) with the text "?" as if to say "What
did you buy now?" :p

I got home late from work (like 8:00 P.M.) only to hear my boy
playing it (he's a pretty good guitar player). He was playing
along with the built-in rhythm through his guitar amp. So, it
was pretty loud. It sounded great. He was really going to
town with it.

I finally got to check it out. I'm very impressed. I'm going to
have some fun with this. The first thing I did was install
straploks so it it compatible with all the guitar straps in the house.

Did they have to print the instructions on poster-size paper? :D

The built-in tuner is cool. For those unfamiliar with it, there
are three LED's on the front panel that serve two purposes:
displaying the rhythm mode and used for tuning (e.g. low-
center-high). The tuner is configured for an 'E'. So, you
have to fret each string at 'E' to tune it.

I'm getting ready to leave for Lollapalooza in Chicago so I don't
know how much time I'll get to play with it this week. I was
considering taking it but it would probably just sit in my
hotel room (it gets pretty busy at Lollapalooza). I'll have
more time on it next week.

There is another interesting feature about the bass that I was
not aware of until I bought it. When you switch the power switch
off (into "Standby"), the bass is configured for passive mode.

Also, I sat this bass on my workbench for a little scrutiny. When
I did, it was buzzing. Apparently, it was picking up the
fluorescent lights above my workbench. I guess it doesn't
use humbucking pickups.

Yeah, it can be a tad noisy, but I've had worse. With the tone rolled down and bright switch off it's pretty quiet. And I think the bass sounds best that way anyhow.

Just a quick heads up. Don't get overly excited about the passive mode. Yeah, it plays and sounds pretty good actually with the power off... but you have no control whatsoever. Volume and tone knobs don't do nuthin. It's full on, and that's it. Good to know I guess if you're gigging it, no worries about the batteries.

Just checked the Vox site for kicks. Can't believe that they have almost a dozen models of guitar, and the only bass model they make is this? Crazy.
I would love a teardrop bass in that blue color MINUS the speaker and all.

Though I could see this being a cute little living room bass, the teardrop kind of negates sitting on the couch and playing along to commercials.

Bumping this thread to give a heads up to anyone who may have ever been interested in one of these.

They've been discontinued and they're disappearing super fast. The asking price is also rising quickly. I just did a quick search to recommend one for a newbie here.

FWIW, this has been one of my best bass investments. It fits in an airplane overhead, and I can't tell you how awesome that's been. I travel a lot, and to do so without having to do any baggage checks is awesome. It sounds great, it's much higher quality than it looks, has a rock hard maple neck with great action and feel, and works awesomely for learning songs on the road, as a backup, whatever. Stupid fun to jam with too, as there are lots of beats and tempos to toy with.

I love mine.

Within a few months they're going to be obsolete.
