I'm posting this in hopes of giving someone else the gas that's killin me over here. I don't want to be the first one here to drop 4 bills on one of these. Surely this will fire someone else up:

Oldschool Vox built in effects would be cool. I would have liked to have seen repeat percussion and some sort of fuzz in there. As it stands, it looks like they put the guts of their AC1 micro amp in there, complete with the rubbish drum machine thing. Will that tiny speaker be able to impart much fundamental??

I've played a Teardrop once. I loved the rubbery tone. The neck was like half a snooker cue; really thin. I liked Lee Jackson's Vox tone with The Nice. Probably the most stand out Teardrop tone I can think of though I'm sure there are more.

Saw these at the local music store yesterday, for the first time ever. I was not aware of the "Apache" brand and given:

- the close proximity to China (I'm in HK),

- the built-in FX,

- the cheap-looking hardware/fx/colours,

- the non-sequitur biplane...

I passed them by without so much as a second glance.

I love Vox Phantoms, I love biplanes, I dig the '70s Gretsch guitars with built-in FX, I like unusual colour schemes – and yet I found these "Apaches" incongruous and I thought they were ultra cheapo Vox knockoffs from across the border, Made In China.

Then today I see this thread...

I'll go back and check them out, but my first impression wasn't great and I'm disappointed to find this thread and learn they are actually Vox instruments.

I'll continue my search for a '66 Vox Phantom ...

Haven't posted yet cuz I wanted to make a video and take some pix... but a couple of weeks ago I pulled the trigger, and well. I'm a little slow on the shutter button. I reviewed it on amazon, so I'll just post the link below.

I'm pleasantly surprised. Sounds a lot better than I expected, and is a lot of fun to play. Great neck, action, setup, and doens't feel like the toy I was expecting. Anyhow, anyone interested can read here... and I'd be happy to answer any questions if anyone else is considering one.

Only update I'd have on that is that I took it to a rehearsal last week, and it sounded fine. Cut through the mix w no problem, and had a very flat, even sort of tone. Pickup is placed well to not be too thin, barky, or thumpy. Amp I was using sucked, so I couldn't experiment a whole lot, but bottom line is I'd consider it very giggable. Price has gone down about $100 so it's a lot more do-able now too.

Get rid of the speaker and all its appurtenances and I would want one. They are too toy-like. Just knobs for volume and tone and it would be pretty cool.

Now this is interesting..I saw these on E Bay and thought..God probably a piece of crap. Saw the Youtube video and was completely blown away. Would I buy one..perhaps if it did not have a built in amp and speaker...to me it just looks cheesy.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Just remember, it's not incredibly loud... if you're expecting it to crank, there's a chance of some disappointment.

Which one didja get? I got the white teardrop. Was a tough decision, but ultimately decided on that because I thought it would be coolest looking if I ever wanted to actually gig it. All the others I thought would stand out a bit too much.
