While we must remember that "starts at 3200" means "costs much more than 3200", this is great news. I wonder how long build time is?

I live in Malta and curiously, back in the early 90's there were generally three types of basses which people owned here - 1) cheap brands like Encore and Hohner 2) Fenders (which were really expensive) and 3) Wals which were the only high end basses which people who could afford them actually purchased. I must have tried 4 or 5 wal basses, the MK1 models actually.

And I dont think his tone is characteristic of the classic "Wal tone". Go listen to Rush's Hold Your Fire Album or Power Windows from the 80's to hear what it sounds like. My favorite bass tone of all time!
Even with the currency conversion, they're still in the same ballpark as many other high-end customs. Many specced-out Sadowskys cost $5k, not to mention the likes of Alembic, Conklin, Dingwall, custom shop Warwicks, etc, which can be significantly more. Don't forget, Wals have bespoke pickups, electronics and hardware, and sound like nothing else.
As far as UK luthiers go, the prices are steep, but only up there with the other high-end custom builders. A top-spec Sei or Overwater can easily cost £3200 or more.

I've always loved Mick Karn's sound on the Japan albums. Especially Oil On Canvas. He plays a defretted Wal and it's very in your face and awesome.
I always like the MK II 5 string Sir Paul used to play.... I wonder why he went back to that hofner?!?!?
Excellent... had a trip to the factory way back and met wal and pete, nearly got one ordered but bought a SB1000 instead... now it looks as though I'll never be able to afford one!

The original name of the company is not Wal Basses, it's Electric Wood Limited. Plus their British, they call an elevator a lift. So cut them a little slack.

They play and feel great and you can pretty much get any tone you want with the way they've set up the electronics.
To each his own though. I wouldn't drop 5K on an instrument without ever having played one. If you get the opportunity to check one out you should.

I think this is terrible news (for me personally). Now not only am I too broke to buy a new Wal, This pretty much assures that an old Waller era example is completely untouchable by mere mortals. I thought the analogy of the pre cbs Fender prices was an apt comparison. Oh well, I am in the sometimes unpopular camp that believes these instruments are worth it.

Once I start getting feedback on the current crop, I think I might be looking at a 6er. This will be a ways away, but I'm already considering signing up for extra shifts.......
