New woodworking hobby

I started tinkering in woodworking over the past few years. I built a bar, some furniture, shelves, etc. Recently, a friend of mine asked me to make him a somewhat unorthodox wood item. He offered me good money for it, so I said what the hell. That's since turned into a (very) small business. I have a lot of kinky friends, etc. and apparently paddles are a hot commodity among the kink population. Being pure and innocent, I'd know nothing about this. However, being the capitalist that I am, I figured what the hell. I'ma make some paddles. Thus far, I've sold six, and have I think eight or nine people wanting one made for them. Below are some that I've made and sold, and below that are some that are ready for finishing. As soon as I get my custom branding iron delivered, of course. :D

These ones will be finished as soon as I brand them and coat them...

And here's the branding iron logo I ordered. :)

I ventured into woodworking about 30 years ago after watching Norm Abram on The New Yankee Workshop. Soon, I had a garage-full of modest equipment...table saw, router table, scroll saw, etc. I'd spend most every weekend out there making small furniture and knickknacks. My plans were to build a mega-dollhouse for my daughter, and an awesome clubhouse for my son. (They were one and two at the time.) The thing is, once they started requiring more of my time, I quickly pushed aside my hobby time to be a daddy, and never got around to completing those (and other) projects. I hung on to all my tools, thinking that maybe I'll do those things for my grandkids on down the line. (They're still waiting, too.)

Anyway, you sure have the talent. That second pic looks like the beginnings of an elegant neck-thru bass. Keep up the good work!

Thank you! I appreciate that. I don't see it blossoming into more than just a hobby. It's fun and relaxing. As with almost anything, when it becomes more of a job than a hobby, the fun and relaxing parts often go away. It will be better once summer is over and it's not 115 outside. At some point I plan on doing a bass body. I certainly don't have the skills to make a neck, however. That sounds awfully daunting.

You just might be surprised! If you can find a mentor to talk you through it, it's pretty easy! That's how I built my 1 and only bass. Luckily he had some neck specific tools which saved a few bucks (fret saw, etc.). He insisted he wouldn't touch it... I had to do 100% of the work. I'm grateful he did that! I just took my time, did a bit of additional reading/research, and everything flowed beautifully!

Neat looking paddles! You have the skills, you just don't know it!

Thanks! I've always been my fiercest critic. Maybe I'll give it a try at some point. I'll start with a body, and if that comes out good, then I may try to tackle a neck. Perhaps fretless first, for simplicity's sake. :)

Bring back corporal punishment in schools! Today's youth are BROKEN! It's pretty obvious that "time out" doesn't work!!! :smug:

Well of course but my experience the bad ones aren't the best for long term.
I think that's generally true, but there are exceptions. I know 'cause I have one. :)

Great idea! I enjoy woodwork, too. Just no time.

I have a nice whirligig in the back yard - been thinking of making them when I retire next year.

Stuff kinda like this....
They are really cool. I might want to make something like that. Sadly, the Phoenix sun and heat would decimate most paints within a year, probably.

Maybe Etsy might be a place to sell the paddles.
I've had more than a few people tell me that. I may create a page a throw a few up to see what kind of traffic I see. If the interest is there, I'll start cranking out some more. For me, my biggest hurdle is designs. I have a poor imagination in that regard. And I don't like doing the same thing twice. Unless requested, of course. :)

Man, it's gonna take a long time to get the canoe across the lake...
Any responses I would have for that would not be deemed TB friendly. It's awfully stuffy 'round these parts, you know.

Don't let them know about the branding iron, they might want those too.

I'm seeing potential for a multi tool application my brutha from anutha mutha.

The handle could certainly be optimized for... things. Wink wink, say no more. Know what I mean? Nudge Nudge. Nods as good as a wink to a blind man, know what I mean? Is it a goer? You know, the paddle. Is it a goer? Does it give 'er a go? Know what I mean?

The handle could hold certain squeezable tubes as well.

It's funny you say that....
