New woodworking hobby

I haven't seen that, or wanted to, but a few years ago ran into an acquaintance who used to be on the tech team at church but suddenly developed attendance problems, and got dropped off the rotation. When I encountered him in the hardware store, he had a brutal-looking wound above his knee. I said 'Dude, what the heck happened?' and he answered 'bicycle chain.' As I was pondering how a bicycle chain gets wrapped so perfectly there, without leaving any other marks, he showed me a lashing spot on his shoulder... and casually mentioned that the church didn't appreciate his lateness to tech team, but they clearly didn't understand that he couldn't just leave in the middle of a BDSM shoot. I mean, the safe word is for like emergencies, not 'I gotta get going now' situations.

Oh.
Safe words are an absolute. Everything stops for ANY reason. If somebody doesn't stop after a safe word they are dangerous!

I mean, sometimes truth IS stranger than fiction. That somebody is into it is no big surprise I guess (people are into all sorts of crazy things, as we well know), that somebody could start a cottage industry around this sort of thing is definitely a bit new to me, though I guess any of that kind of business has to start somewhere.

Like someone said, “Whatever you can think of, no matter how bizarre it may seem, I can guarantee it’s someone's fetish and there’s at least one web site devoted to it.” No judgement on the spanking folks, of course.

I'd kill for some decent wood spoons, The crap you can find in stores isn't worth having. I found some from Germany that weren't too bad, made of olive wood, but they still aren't even close to what I want.
I bought some by a company called Typhoon years ago, really heavy duty shaped handles etc. Must be 20 years now and still going strong. Very like these 4 Piece Wooden Utensil Set

That doesn't do it for me. I want shaped spoons like a serving spoon or teaspoon blown up; I want a three dimensional curve to the handle. Then a couple more of the same sort that are longer for stirring pitchers.

Really deep 3D pieces use a lot of wood. Too much work for minimal return, IMO. At least for me, with the tools at my disposal.

I do want to do a cutting board, however. A nice, big, thick pro-level one. There are some amazing 3D-look cutting boards I've seen recently that are really trippy looking. That will be a future project at some point.

Here's my current paddle count. These all just got their second coat of oil this AM. they'll be done by early next week.

Premium spoons command premium prices. I don't think $25 a piece for four of them is asking too much.

Wow. That's dirt cheap for the work they'd need to carve and finish. Exotic wood custom-carved paddles like mine will go for anywhere between $50 to $150 for the real intricate and/or expensive wooded ones. Two of those are already spoken for: $75 for the Purpleheart one and $125 for the Padauk one
I guess my retirement has put me out of touch with current pricing.

Much like what us crazy bassists pay for ridiculously priced custom instruments (myself included), people in the kink community seek out hand-carved custom “instruments“ as well. That's been my experience, at least. Are many of those basses, and/or paddles actually worth the price? Usually no, IMO. Who am I to argue with capitalism though?
