New: Zoom B3n Multi-Effects

Well sadly I had another failure with the B3n (second defective unit in 1.5 months) so I decided to just return it and go with BiasFX through iPad mini 4. I am using the GuitarJack Stage as my floor controller and it is working great (already had it for my guitar gig for over a year now) so I guess I am out with the Zoom... as much as I loved it I need to be able to rely on it during gigs.

nope, actually the left channel output died completely... it was working fine at sound check then when I came back for the show it was not sending signal, replaced all cables while my bandmates were playing the first song with no bass... and no dice, had to run direct to the board for the first set. The next day I diagnosed and tested a bit and the right channel was working fine (which I used for that night's show) then I just decided I couldn't do it anymore... sadly. I used it for 5-6 shows and a few practices in between and I loved the sound, but I couldn't trust them after two different units having two different problems in such a short amount of time.

Has anyone (this site or other) listed out the effects in each patch? I may be able to get it from Guitar Lab at home but I think through my pedal boards while I'm not working at work, and would find it easier with a spreadsheet of effects by patch.

Just curious. It would have been a bunch of work for someone to do unless Guitar Lab has an export function.

Zoom would be pleased that you value their preset patches so much as to wish them be documented!

I do not believe the current version of Guitar Lab would be much help with that, but then again, I am still mentally recovering after learning of this appreciation! :D

Rethinking The Signal Chain

With the first-class cabinet sims and extra effect slots in the B3n comes new and greater opportunity. Even though the tips I am about to share apply to those using the B3n in an FRFR capacity, those who do not may still find the information of value.

As I build patches based on the lack of both a physical bass amp and cabinet, construction starts with my selection of those two model types. With this as the tonal base for a patch, now is where the power afforded by modeling can be realized.

In the real world, if I were to now add a stomp box to my physical amp and cabinet, I would usually have no choice but to place it between instrument and amp. The addition of a Phaser, for example, would occur before the amp as it cannot be connected anywhere else (if the amp has no effect loop.)

In the modeling world, the Phaser can now be placed after the cabinet, after being picked up by microphone, as is typically done in the studio.

With the exception of Drive type effects, nearly all others would serve better after the cabinet sim. Certainly, for personal or artistic reasons one may prefer them before the amp, but now one has the choice!

Before adding an effect to your B3n chain in the traditional mindset, consider placement after the cabinet sim. Results will vary, as will your amazement, with each effect type having newfound benefits when placed at the other end of the signal chain. :thumbsup:

The Guitar Lab app lists the number of patches that each individual effect has been assigned to. I do not find this the least bit useful, I just don't care. Instead of (or in addition to) this it would be useful to have the Processing Power Value listed so that one could assess the sum of the intended/desired effects when creating patches.

Semitones (a half step or 1 fret higher or lower) are broken down into cents. The space between 2 notes in Western Music is a half step or semitone and equals 100 cents. 1200 cents equal an octave The concept is that by by detuning (either flat and/or sharp) and blending the detuned note(s) with the original pitch a fattening of the sound occurs. On lower registered instruments such as a bass this is a little tricky because the frequencies are so low that they cancel each other out and thin the bass out. This makes for midrangey nasally sounds. Experiment by sweeping the pitch (measured in cents) of the detuned note against an open E string. As you get further away you will get chorus/flange/doubling effects (or parts of these as they also incorporate delay and modulation) and will eventually experience dissonance. To my ears Detuning in a mono or live setting does the opposite of it's intent, it thins instead of fattening. Try it in stereo with the detuned notes panned wide for the most dramatic (and least detrimental) effect on the fundamental.

One of my favorite features of the Zoom platform is the ability to move the effects around. I'll always go in to a patch and move things around, listening for subtle tonal differences. I throw convention out the window and use my ears. If a compressor winds up in the middle of a chain, so be it.

Thank you so much for the explanation. I played around a bit with the PitchSHFT and MonoSHFT yesterday. If my understanding is correct, if I set the Balance on either to 100, and Shift to -2, then the output would be a step down, so my E string would become a D and so on. Is that a correct?

You are correct but I think you will find that the B3n will fall short for this application. Go to a music store and plug into an Eventide H9 and try using it for a drop tuning effect. It is one of the best. One thing you need to understand is that while a unit may track the note accurately and produce a stable, pitch correct output the process of creating the new note changes the envelope of the note. Try going up one octave and you will hear that the attack of the harmonized note is twice as fast as the dry unaffected note, this make for a more chirpy sound. I don't know if any of the harmonizes out there can correct for this.....yet. If you want a bunch of tunings available instantaneously try a bass with a synth pickup and it's associated processor
 
This model sounds really great!

The compression is vintagely thick, sweet and musical.

Yeah based on earlier comments I built a set of three patches based on it and the Bassman amp sim. My last set was based on the 160 and no amp. I really like the Bassman because I can add +6 (dB?) to my signal without any color by pressing the second switch. This is how I get more oomph during a song. During a set if I seem to be relying on that extra loudness I can crank my amp a little between songs and turn off the boost.

SW1: 76B SynDly — When I need synth or delay.

  • BaMnPitch shifts me down a half step for Black Velvet in E. That awesome fretless-sounding riff was made by a synthesizer. I make it with a proper fretless bass. I don't love the tracking of this effect and I have to open up the tone of my bass to get it to sing but it will do.

SW3: 76B FC Fuz - For when I need a little hair. I like introducing "Come Together" very aggressively, with fuzz, flange *and* chorus. It's kind of obnoxious. I moved the limiter to the end of the chain to get the same volume regardless of which effects are active: the flanger kicks it up too much otherwise.

Again, the key with all of these is to perform with the *second* Bassman switch positioned on SW1 on the left. So all these patches let me hit SW1 for extra volume, and the other two let me bring other effects in and out during or between songs.
