Newbie confirming on amps

I just picked up a SR405 this week and was looking for an amp too. So after viewing several newbie amp threads, if I hear everyone correctly, buy once with as much as you can afford and you'll be set to move from practice to gig? Is there a minimum watts I should look at? Most of my playing (when ready) would be in smaller venues, probably large church settings (contemporary style).

I'm looking at the Ampeg PF 500 head with the PF210HE cabinet. Thoughts??

200-300 watts into a good bass cab will cover most if not all your gigs.

That amp wont be putting out 200-300 watts with an 8 Ohm cab.

I recomment you look at the PF-500/800 with a single PF-115LF, and have a plan to add a second.

Agreed with CL. Although a PF350 does the job well for me, I do prefer the extra headroom I get with the PF800.

Me three. It isn't so much as having an amp that will do the job but having one with extra headroom and one that you aren't going to have to push to it's limit.

You don't want your church to be big enough to just fit the current congregation. You want it big enough to have the capacity to accommodate more.

The pf heads are pretty sweet for the price, I bought one last week as a back up / practice amp and am really stoked on it. Get a good pair of headphones and a 1/4 -1/8 adapter and you find your self jamming way past your bed time.

Well, yes boys, but the PF-500 has a bad reputation that will at the very least make resale low. The PF-115LF is fine, and probably a better choice than the PF210he.

The problem I am having is that the OP hasn't explicitly stated a budget, and if he/she is typically playing with a drummer, solo banjo, multiple loud guitarists, ukelele orchestra, horns, choir, electric cello, alphorn trio, etc.

In other words, if one asks too vague a question, one will only get generic easily agreed to varagy out of the aforementioned bass amp sages.

As far as budget goes, probably around $500-$750. Band would include drummer, acoustic, electric & maybe occasional keys.

Some of the earliest batches of PF500's had cut-out problems, yes, but if you get one made in the past year or two, they've been revised and problems are much less of an issue now.
