News on Chunk Systems Bass Synth

I love the choice of envelope-following filter sweeps or ASDR, but I'm a bit worried about what combinations of output it can do.

If I'm going to buy one of these it's got to replace a few of my current pedals, and unless it can mix two synthesized notes I'm not sure if it will do enough. :(

In case anyone else was wondering, got a response today:

Hi Jon,

In the first version of the firmware, the fuzz gating is linked to the pitch
tracking. Whenever the tracking system detects an input note, the fuzz gate
opens. We plan to introduce BD-style gating with adjustable threshold in a
firmware update since we don't want to delay the product release any
further.

Fair play to Richard, he answers questions very quickly even when he must be pretty busy right now.

I'm sure we can all appreciate them working to prevent the OS being vaporware, even if it means getting a few features after the release.

Ok, So i flipped through the manual last night to get a feel what what this thing can do. First of all, WOW. I understood about half of what I read, but it seems that this thing was really well thought out. I'm grateful that it allows so much user control of all the features. And now I have no regrets pre-ordering one of these things, especially with the early deal through bass people. I'm super anxious for its arrival now.

The more I think about this, the more it seems like it wouldn't do enough for me to justify the price. If it could replace a bunch of my effects then I'd be happy to buy one, but as it stands I think there's only one of my current pedals that would be made redundant. Maybe two (the ASDR filter setting could make the filter on my BMS obsolete, the waveform generator could outmode my pulse synth).

I'd still in some way need the mess that is my LS-2/OC-2/Synth combo though, and that's the most irritating thing on my board, just because the wiring's such a mess.

I was/am kinda on the same waveform as this....I could no way justify so much for a single unit. However, if i did not buy the OS, i would need to buy a synth. EHX BMS, £160. I would also need a sample and hold, Subdecay Prometheus, £120. Then maybe an octaver, just for the hell of it, EHX M-POG, £120. Now were is OS money and a crap load of realestate down :hmm:

Life's a b***h at times, i know :D

If you want a sine wave from the occillator just use one of the other waveforms (square or triangle) and then apply the filter so that the overtones are removed.

Oh and you'd want to set the pitch tracking to affect the filter cutoff position to make the sound the same up and down the neck.

Nice idea, but it doesn't seem you can do that at present - unless you've thought of a way? The three modes for the VCF are static, envelope and ADSR - as far as I can tell there's no way to dynamically affect the VCF ini frq parameter.

I was also kind of thinking the same way too. I wasn't really looking to spend so much on a single pedal however I did want to do synth and envelope sounds. My other main option was a BMS and a separate envelope filter (probably a Qtron) which if I bought here would cost probably $1000AUD and if I bought from overseas it would be almost the same cost as the OS with the exchange rates and shipping. Seeing as the OS can do both and its an Aussie product I'm more than happy to spend the money....




Having said that, I'm in it for the shirt.

The email I got this morning stated 'tentative ETA of 5 -7 days' - Aus that is... happy days, though 'tentative' reflects the 24/7 effort required by Richard & co to get the units shipped by all accounts. I might need more time to get through the 63 pages anyway...

Hmm... I'm going on holidays tomorrow. I'll have a laptop but there will be noone at home to answer the phone if the Bass People ring. Looks like I might have to wait a little longer to get mine if they do come in next week.
