Double Bass Next Phase of Music

Off topic, but....I lost my old, cheap MIDI keyboard in a move. Lately, I've just been entering notes in the DAW with the mouse. I can build a case for it, for me. Sometimes, I feel that it results in less "fooling around" playing sounds with the keyboard and more of a deliberate thinking of a good musical idea and writing it in the DAW. Sometimes. I still want to pick up another one, though. Any recommendations?

I’ve been happy using Arturia keyboards for general composition. The Keylab Essentials series is a good choice that won’t beak the bank if you want a “synth action” type keyboard from a reputable keyboard manufacturer. The 61 key model runs around $260.

Native Instruments is another good option got keyboard. Like Arturia, they make a variety of keyboards at different price points. Cost depends on number of keys, key size, and the action. Synth, semi-weighted, and weighted are key action from lowest to highest price. Needless to say, an 88 key piano weighted action keyboard will be quite expensive. I manage quite well with a smaller, less feature rich keyboard hooked up to my DAW.

A good source for recording and music gear reviews is a gent by the name of SanjayC. This was his review of small MIDI keyboards last year. Worth a watch.

Maybe we shouldn't have ever recorded music... But here we are.

I think about this often, trying to imagine

a) what a treat it must have been to hear ANY music in 1875;
b) the different paradigm for making a living playing music;
c) the relative paucity of different musical influences one might be exposed to;
d) how many more people there must have been who played and sang, because you usually had to make the music yourself if you wanted to hear it.
