Whaddaya think of my idea to talk Denver out of Zach Wilson and develop him? I don't think da Steelers have a QB to start. I really, really don't know why they brought in Wilson other than the fact that he's super-cheep with Denver paying him a boatload not to play in Colorado this year.

I'd wait until Tomlin is gone to bring any QB they think has a shot of being an NFL starter. In addition to not developing coaches, Tomlin does not develop QB's. Any players for that matter on offense.
He's a defensive coach running on defensive coach skills and schemes from 20 years ago. He's had a few really good defensive players on his watch, but most of that roster is buddies and pals he hangs out with on Sundays. You know how we think it's cool to get some of our buddies to come over and hang out while we watch a game on the couch? Tomlin is doing the exact same thing, just on the sidelines of an NFL stadium each week.
One reason Russell Wilson was brought in is for what you mention, money. That and the longshot chance they'd catch a break and a guy who hasn't played good football in 3-4 years would all of the sudden get his form back. Yeah, when has that ever worked in the NFL?
I'd like to be wrong about any of these assertions, and I'll gladly back down on any of them if there is proof otherwise. I'm not holding my breath.

The idea that any other teams' cast offs can turn it around in Pittsburgh is a mighty big stretch. The Steelers haven't been able to develop a quarterback for a very long time, so developing Fields or rehabbing Wilson is not going to happen. That means, when these two guys on the roster fail and they have to go back to the draft next year, they will more likely than not bring in someone they also can't develop. KP 2.0. Ben was a unicorn who had the talent to succeed despite the coaching during his tenure, who for the most part held him back if anything.

We all know what has to change...

So the NFL has announced they won't be using their much vaunted new system for measuring first downs that was to (eventually) replace the sticks and chains. I didn't watch *every* pre-season game but I watched quite a few (too many?) and I think I saw ONE instance where the use of the "chip" system *maybe* took about the same time as the traditional "run out with the chains" system did; most of the time it took far, far longer - embarrassingly so in many cases. As someone who has made a pretty good living in IT for almost 50 years I wouldn't describe myself as a luddite but I do often see instances where "new" technology is forced onto situations to replace functioning systems (if it ain't broke, "fix" it!).

Something else that didn't immediately occur to me until later in the pre-season, once I saw some instances of the process actually working, was that for the fans (especially those in the stadium) we are left to take the word of the NFL "home office" as to whether the attempt was made. With the chains it's clear to anyone watching, with the black box not so much.

The NFL certainly seems to have a jones for this system and no doubt it will eventually become the new standard but at least for this season looks like they didn't make the first down and are forced to punt (at least that's what the chains indicate).

I hope that’s true. I want my Falcs to kick his teeth in this weekend. If RW is at his best he’s good. But it’s a new year and nobody knows anything yet.

The San Fran Ohio State one rings true. Both have head coaches they are enamored with. Both coaches have not done a great deal with the talent they have had.

The two NFL coaches that I fail to see the pandering to are Shanahan and McVay. McVay rode Fishers draft acumen into the ground. Since those players have dwindled, so has the Rams fortunes. Shanahan hasn't really shown much of anything except he can squander a teams assets or ride a generational talent into the ground.

I don't know ... I'm very sick and just woke up. I might be posting out of my mind :D

Justin Fields could potentially be a game changer in a Taysom Hill kind of role, but he has the same consistency problems that he’s had from day 1. If you can’t pick and choose when to have him under center, he’s more likely to be a liability than an asset.

it’s too bad really. If he could take care of that, he could be a top tier QB.

You're much nicer about Fields than I would be buddy. Taking care of the ball is just one thing in the list of problems Fields has, none of which are fixable in my opinion at this stage in his career.
