I have often wondered this myself. However, they discussed it on PTI yesterday, and Mike and Tony made some good points. The Brown family still runs things and is still incredibly tight-fisted--basically, no big-name free agents ever, and they'll let good players leave rather than pony up to keep them. Also, while the Bengals haven't won a playoff game under Lewis, at least they actually get to the playoffs--they apparently went through a dreadful period between Wyche and Lewis.

Just looked it up, they had zero winning seasons from 1991 (Wyche's last) through 2004 (Lewis' second). List of Cincinnati Bengals seasons - Wikipedia

As long as Bungle fans are happy with mediocrity, Lewis stays. When they finally tire of it, if they do, they'll have to use their wallets to let the Brown family know.
But hey, this approach the Brown family is taking is not unique in the NFL or other pro sports.

Three words: Owner, Mike Brown.

Mike is a great fan of loyalty above all else, and that has colored many decisions he has made since taking over control of the team upon the death of his father, the legendary Paul Brown in 1991. He's plenty smart about the law (beat the IRS over a million or so in back taxes of some kind), blackmailed Cincinnati and Hamilton County for a new stadium in '95, and negotiated a contract for the new stadium that continues to cost us HC residents to fund ANY new updates to the stadium- turf, score/video boards, etc. He pays nothing.

As far as football is concerned, he is not his father. Mike feels that coming from such NFL DNA, the genius must be flowing through him. It ain't. David Shula (another "sure thing" from a football dynasty). Bruce Coslett. Akili Smith. David Klingler. Chris Henry. Chad Ochocinqo, or Johnson, or whoever he is now. Those 3-13 teams were sooo much fun to watch. Last season they started 8-0 but since that start they have reverted to Bungledom. Five first-round playoff losses in five consecutive years. However...

Marvin doesn't rock the boat, doesn't complain- good company man. He doesn't make demands, he isn't a media trainwreck who can't keep his off field behavior or speech in check; Dartmouth Mike likes that. Mike always sees the light at the end of the tunnel, and knows his way is the right way. And if that means losing in the first round of playoffs for 5 straight years, well, we're getting there. Right? Well, likely not this year.

For the record: I am NOT a Bengals fan. I took great joy in watching those 3-13 teams, and the crapfests that accompanied them. Bruce Coslett's "deer in the headlights" looks on the sidelines made me cry with laughter. Schadenfreude indeed.

The Browns are in Cleveland, not Chicago. There might be an NFL team in Chicago. We know there isn't one in Cleveland right about now. Anything else you hear is just propaganda to make you confused.

The Seahawks are not the team you want to play for if you are a running back. Not if you want your body parts in one piece. I'm not sure it matters against Tampa Bay, but it's the NFL. Any given team can beat any other given team. Except the Browns. I don't know what they did to piss off the football gods, but something is biting them.

And yet, at 3-6-1 they're only 1 1/2 games out of the division lead, and could still win the North. These are dark times indeed. And the NFL wonders why their ratings are tanking.

There is obviously a systemic failure somewhere in the organization. The Browns need an intervention from the top down. They need a focus group from the NFL office to come in and compare what they're doing to what competitive teams are doing. This is not good for the game or the league. Same goes for Jets, Jags, Niners, and a couple of others. That's a lot of dud games that even football fans are not going to tune in for.

If Oakland can turn it around in a couple of seasons and become not only competitive but one of the most dangerous teams in the league, any team can do it.

A smart ex-player who knows the game and has some business acumen is a huge shot in the arm for an organization. It just takes a smart owner to see it that way and loosen his grip a little.

Manning would probably be exactly that kind of impact administrator.
