NFL Week #4

For most of them - no.

Most weren't upper division NCAA or NFL Europe Refs. They were low division NCAA, NAIA, and even some Lingerie Football League Refs.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. I didn't know "division" played into it, I thought it was years of service at the collegiate level

And now that a deal's been reached, it looks like the Raiders will lead the NFL in penalties again this year.

We're hoping so here in Denver this Sunday.

Regular refs return today. Sheese, not a moment too soon.

And bitchin' about the refs will be a thing of the past! Now that we all know how bad it can REALLY be...;)

Somewhat, yes.

For example, they marked off NCAA penalty yards in Denver's second game, and Denver got the short end of the stick on that one. Still, with four turnovers, I'm not sure how much difference it made, but these things have a way of turning the tide in a game.

Conferring on close calls is obviously lost on these guys. Often, one ref asserts himself, and the others just follow. The League officials upstairs don't seem to be helping enough.

There is a definite "substitute teacher" syndrome developing now, and that is not helping a damn thing. Players and coaches being insulting and humiliating to the refs, inappropriate physical contact and grabbing, etc. We all know this is a tough situation, but that doesn't mean players and staff get to lose their minds and engage in intimidation tactics. That's just unprofessional and counterproductive.

Average length of a game with the sub refs: 8 minutes longer than usual. Not that much, considering how befuddled they are during games.
I agree with most everything you posted above this. On the time issue, perhaps the average covers up the extremes. I saw a few games that were massively slowed down, there was so much dead air. Possessions were disrupted repeatedly.
But some people are putting unfair blame on the sub refs. Like in the GB vs. Seattle game, expecting them to throw an interference flag on a jump ball in the end zone, when the regular refs virtually never do that (since the installment of contemporary interference rules, I have seen literally dozens of jump balls in the end zone with just as much if not more pushing and shoving, and I have never seen an interference flag, not once). Veteran referees admit that they will not throw an interference flag, they let the boys jump up and fight for it, but everyone wants to crucify the subs for not throwing a flag Monday night. That's not exactly fair.
I disagree here. I've seen a lot of Hail Marys--most happen in the middle of the field, and the ball usually lands in the middle or front of the pack. So lots of pushing goes on, yes, but it can be difficult to pick out individual fouls.

This commission of interference was far different than the norm. The pack was close to the corner--and thus closer to more refs--and the receiver, Tate, was on the outside edge of the pack. He shoved with both hands, it was clearly visible to millions live (before the replay).

Oh well, they're back now.

Yeah, I should clarify, I was referring to last play (end of half, end of game) jump balls in the end zone only. By their own admission, veteran refs have made a conscientious decision to not throw an interference flag in those situations. I've seen pushing and shoving just as bad as Monday night many times, refs standing right there, no flag.

But you're right, it's water under the bridge now.

Honestly, with the exception of a few egregious... well... EXCEPTIONS (which everyone knows about by now and has discussed and analyzed to death)... I didn't have a real big problem with how the replacement refs called these first few games per se. In other words I think they got about as many calls right and wrong as the regular guys have the past few years.

What I had a much bigger problem with was the scab refs' total inability to manage the game and keep the action going. So many times you'd see a flag thrown, and then it was 3 or 4 minutes before the guy announced the penalty, then half the time he'd forget to give the number of the person penalized. Then they'd have to go the booth to figure out where to spot the ball and/or what the game clock should say. And/or, they'd have to confer to figure out what yardage was attached to the penalty, and still sometimes not get it right. Etc. etc. I mean anytime a flag came out you knew you could probably go get a beer and a sandwhich and take a whiz and still be back in time for the next play. And then times that by 10 whenever there was a coaches challenge involved. When the on-air announcers for the networks know the rules better than the stripes on the field, there's a problem.

That all being said I agree with other posters here... shame on the players -- and even more so the coaches -- who bullied the replacement refs and blatantly took advantage of their inexperience.

I think we'll keep it closer than that. Our offense was bad vs the bears, but not bad in the 1st two games.
Defense has been good.

I may have been a little optimistic. We've did hold Dallas to 7 points and Green Bay to 12 though. It's probably going to be closer then I think though as we don't have a high scoring offense.

Without replacement refs letting SEA CB's mug everyone on every play, and with their clear struggles against the run I think St Lou eats them up.

You think Seattle struggles against the run? You clearly haven't looked at the stats.

What cracked me up is when the head of the lingerie football league announced that the guys on Monday nights game were fired from the LFL for making bad calls........

Now that it's settled lets hope the teams can de-escalate form the Neanderthal Football League it devolved into. Seriously that hit on Schaub? Lost a chunk of ear, and the other in Oakland on DHB?

That said The 'Aint's are in for a rough one going into Lambeau. Something tells me the Pack need to squish someone and here comes a team that can't beat the doormats of the league, at home.

Forgive me father but I must gloat..... The Aint's are 0-3 :D

The Ravens SHOULD take the Browns, they always give us a hard time though, and I wouldn't bite on that spread were I you....
Vick and the Eagles are in a spiral and the amount of damage Vick takes will have him out by week 6, prolly sooner.
Looking about it appears that the Cards could be 7 -0 at Halloween. Who saw THAT coming?
Vikes rising? Lions returning to form? Falcons, Bengals and Texans looking good.
Lets hope it all has turned a corner and we can get back to some interesting games......

:D
