NFL Week #8

the only reason the eagles beat the steelers was big ben was hurting.

barring any bike accidents :rolleyes: things look good to me. i think the steeler's offense is underrated, and that's gonna really show this weekend - if the ben and co can keep their ducks in line the giants are in for a surprise. at least i hope so, or it's gonna be a weak monday next week. lol.

Polamalu likely to play Sunday

Coach Mike Tomlin said today he expects safety Troy Polamalu to play against the New York Giants, even though the coach confirmed he sustained a concussion in the fourth quarter against Cincinnati.

"As of right now, we anticipate him playing," Tomlin said.

More good news for the Steelers: Nose tackle Casey Hampton and fullback Carey Davis also are expected to play Sunday against the Super Bowl champions, Tomlin said, and halfback Willie Parker will practice Wednesday and has improved since he reinjured his sprained left knee last Monday.

...I'm not quite as optimistic about the Steeler game. I am picking Pittsburgh, but it's gonna be a nail biter!!! :hmm:

Just for those who are either Favre(Farve?? ... how DO you pronounce his name??) lovers or haters and not in the NYC area, this is a sample of what's going on in the media regarding the former Pack superman.....

NY Post 10/21/08:

"IT'S already getting old, watching Brett Favre starting to look old, missing a wide-open Dustin Keller on the second possession of overtime Sunday, getting run down by Kirk Morrison at the sideline after being chased from the pocket on the overtime's third possession. "

Newark Star Ledger 10/21/08:

"On a day when the Jets' rushing attack finally found its groove, Brett Favre struggled through the air for the second consecutive week. Since his career-high six-touchdown performance against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 4, Favre has one touchdown and four interceptions in two games. The league's ultimate risk-taker has thrown two interceptions in half of the Jets' six games."

NY Daily News 10/20/08

" For the second straight game, Favre struggled and threw two interceptions. He completed just 21 of 38 passes for 197 yards with no touchdowns. And one of Favre's interceptions proved to be costly, coming when Favre tried to force a pass to Jerricho Cotchery in the end zone on a third-and-goal from the 8-yard line in the second quarter. Favre's other interception came when he overthrew Cotchery on a play where the two read the defense differently, Mangini said.

Besides throwing two picks for the second straight week, Favre also failed to crack 200 yards passing for the second straight game as the cannon-armed quarterback settled for countless short throws. "


It seems that most of the media is still cutting Favre(Farve??) a little slack, saying that he is a throwing quarterback and shouldn't be forced into a short yardage/run offense, but more and more frequently comments like those above are cropping up. Compared to the first few weeks with the Jets when Favre(Farve??) was supposed to take the Jets directly to the Superbowl, this is getting uglier each week ..... NY media, gotta love 'em .... ;)

Yeah, the honeymoon is over for old Brett ...... :help:

I, for one, wish you would keep this stuff coming. Good stuff! I also noticed, stastically, Rodgers is now leading Favre in almost every QB category.

My picks for week 8

OAK @ BAL Baltimore will win this one. Baltimore has IMO the better defense.

ARI @ CAR ...I think the Panthers will come out on top in this one. Primarily due to a better receiving corps.


TB @ DAL Tampa. Better all around team. Much better defense in terms of speed. TB also has better secondary than Dallas, and TB also have a very under-rated offense.

WAS @ DET Washington. Pretty self explanatory reason why I think they'll beat the winless Lions.

BUF @ MIA..Buffalo, they're playing very solid ball this season making few mistakes and the Dolphins despite the addition of Pennington (who is a good QB) still has a weak offense and pretty shabby D this season.

STL @ NE...I hope it's the Rams, after last weeks win they have a bit of motivation and with Maroney being hurt, its a good possibility for an upset.

SD @ NO...I think this ones going to be close. I think the Chargers have a better running game. So I'm picking them. 3 - 7 point game.

KC @ NYJ...NYJ overall better team and much better QB.

ATL @ PHI...Philly with the upset.

CLE @ JAC...The Jags, because Cleavland just outright sucks.


CIN @ HOU...Here is the 2nd scrub match of the week. Both teams are pathetic, however Houston at least has a couple of wins. I have to go with the Texans on this one, solely because Cinncy is still winless.


NYG @ PIT...Another close one that could go either way. I have to go with NY though. I think Eli is a better QB and has slightly more talented receivers than Pit does. I also think the Giants D is a bit better than Pits.

SEA @ SF...Scrub match up #3. Could honestly care less who wins. I'd have to put my money on SF though. Based entirely on having a slightly better record.

IND @ TEN...The Titans. Indy is pretty pathetic this season and looking like pure crap. The Titans are playing very solid football on both sides of the ball.

I don't think Eli is anywhere near the QB that Roethlisberger is. Big Ben has thrown three perfect games (158.3) in his career thus far. He's one of 34 that have done it, and only one of five that have done it more than once. Eli ain't on that list. His brother is, but not him.

Ben's rating thus far this year (as of 10/13) is 98.1. He's had 9 TDs to 3 picks. Eli's rating is 89.1. He's had 8 TD's to 4 picks. Ben's completion percentage is higher too. Ben's career QB rating is 93.0, With a 93/55 TD/pick ratio. Manning's is 74.9 with an 85/68 ratio

Also, Ben has proven to be much more agile in the pocket than Eli, plus his big size has him tough to take down.

The Steelers and Ben won the Superbowl 'cause they were a better team than their opponent. I seriously doubt anyone would call last years Giants better than NE.

I can go on, but I think the point is made. :cool:

All that being said, I still think the Giants will win. I did also say I think the Giants D is a tad better too. By better I'm not talking about stats persay, but physically. The Giants have a very physical defense and that will come into play. I still think it'll be a close game though. 7 points or less.

Actually, the Jets DID grab Favre(Farve??) for exactly that reason. I don't have the direct quotes from the time period of the acquisition immediately available, but it was very clear that the reason they ditched Pennington was to throw the long ball and become an offensive machine.

There was all kind of talk about how getting Favre(Farve??) would bring a lot of risk, but also with the expectation of a lot of reward. Sure, he chuck up some floaters that would get picked off, but he'd also be long-bombing the Jets to victory ... that was to be the price for getting a mega-superstar, more interceptions but a serious high production scoring game.

Hasn't worked out too well so far, huh? ..... :rolleyes: Personally, I think they were better off with Pennington .....

I'm going to be very disappointed if it's a blow-out either way .... that's only going to show me that one of those two teams simply had a really bad day. A really close game will show how both of these teams match up against A-level opponents, how the defenses bring the pressure, how the offenses can move the ball. Is Ben better than Eli? Don't know. Is Eli a better field commander than Ben? Don't know. But for sure, neither one of them is a bad QB. Time will tell ....

It's probably too early to say this for sure, but right now the Giants and Steelers are the NFL elite and I wouldn't be one bit surprised to see them playing for it all in the Superbowl. Of course, it's up to Pittsburgh to get those pesky Titans out of the way :help:

I'd like to see the quotes. I can't believe anyone in the Jets front office feels that Favre can still play like he did five years ago.

Well that's interesting. I've always hated Lewis as well as Suggs. Here's to hoping the league addreses this!
