Unfortunately, my wife's speech becomes much easier to understand when she becomes angry.
And I wish I'd have been less tolerant of other band members who played too loud.
It is nice to be able to hear music again! Haven't tried them in real conversation yet, but they're certainly better for understanding movies and such.
I have good insurance. Premiums a little over 2k a month. Hearing aid coverage =$0.00.Which ones does Blueshield cover?...

Thanks a lot @bholder. I've been on the fence for awhile now on getting hearing aids. I (only half jokingly) tell friends that it's always a mid August summer evening in my head with all of the crickets and cicadas... The ringing never ends and I seem to always have to ask my wife to repeat what she just said, turn the TV up so I can hear it etc. Never wanted to look into it too much because spending $6K plus for hearing aids is out of the question. At $2K-ish I may have to look into it.

I need good hearing aids and the price is prohibitive for me too. I'm on Medicare and there doesn't seem to be any help from them. I hope this thread develops into a lot of information, I think my main problem is ignorance. I bought a pair (forget the name) for about $600.00 a few years ago, but, as expected, they were just tiny amplifiers, no control except volume. The left one didn't fit too well (too big). They were useful, but the chargers were problematic.
Any and all information here will be of interest.

I can’t understand my wife either because she mumbles too quickly. When she repeats she just mumbles louder. I tell her I don’t need her to be louder, just more clear and slower.
Typical conversation goes something like this….
Wife: mfrdfghjk, fllldfg thufhj.
Me: What?
Wife: MFRDFGHJK, FLLLDFG THUFHJ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We all need to be more assertive about protecting ourselves, especially when the consequence of suffering in silence is likely to be suffering in silence for the rest of our lives.
As someone who got a mild case of tinnitus from a piercing home alarm that went off right next to my ear, I agree wholeheartedly. I have used custom IEMs whenever I could on gigs. I wear Eargasm earplugs to jams, practices and non-IEM gigs. I even wear them at concerts and on airplanes. A little paranoia can go a long way.
Mine are Signia Brand ~$4000 CDN. Seem to do what they are supposed to. They adjust automatically to different sound environments pretty well.
Only issue is I get a weird vibrato effect when I play harmonica that only I can hear.

I took them through the adjustment setup feedback process where it plays a bunch of tones and I signal whether I can hear them - wow much better even, now, than before - really picks up the high end now. I didn't realize how noisy that fan in the living room is! haha The improved tone on bass notes, listening to music - wow!
After reading this, I predict the inevitable “How old is everyone?” thread shortly.

Also, I should probably get some HAs myself. I have otosclerosis in my left ear and have little titanium bits that replaced one of my inner ear bones. As a result, I can't undergo MRIs any more, which sucks because my lower back is shredded.

Or checkout your local big box store, but please don’t spend $4+k on hearing aids. It isn’t necessary and imo those places should be exposed as the scam operations they are.

Anyone here have any experience with the Bose OTC hearing aids? They have a small behind-the-ear piece and are adjustable via a phone app and are priced under $900 for the pair. Curious to how they might compare to some of the pricier OTC aids.

I pick mine up on the 18th. Not sure what kind; whatever the VA gives me. Last set I had were Oticons, and they were really nice. They had a Bluetooth connection to my phone which I used to play Iron Maiden albums while in boring meetings at work.
If you can convince the VA that shooting cannons damaged your hearing they pay for hearing aides for the rest of your life.

I've had the experience before - like suddenly going from a greyed-out old film print to a fresh color pressing! Well worth it, just couldn't get them to work last time.
I have these too. I’m been using them when needed for a month. The extraneous noise amplification is a little annoying (and sometimes jarring), and the itch is annoying. Also, I find them distracting to use on the phone. But they do amplify conversations.They were dropped off a bit ago, had to charge them enough to "phone home" and update sw. Got them charged and initialized, trying them out for a bit. Very comfortable, very good sound. I'm impressed. I had previously tried the EARGO MAX about 5 years back, they worked well for the hearing, and were comfrotable, but I couldn't get them to stay charged or clean them properly. These seem much better in all regards.
Initial impression: Recommended.

The motive for buying them was the difficulty I have hearing my wife. Like some of the rest of you, I’m not having great success hearing her clearly even with the Eargos. Maybe I should have her see an “Elocutionist.”
