I'm on record as holding out hope that the B's and Seguin could find some middle ground and harness his talent. But I trust the B's coaching and management people, if they didn't see it happening, then to trade Seguin to get some cap relief and good players that fit the system is OK by me.

Now they have the money to sign Rask and Bergeron and potentially a $4-5,000,000/yr free agent. Git it done.

Mkandolf - thanks for the news on the wiper blades - perhaps ANCO will develop little wiper blades for those face shields - the players are always wiping them down. I could see little manually operated blades as being a useful feature. [Is there a emoticon that indicates that I'm being half-serious here?]

I figured it had something to do with the lack of playoff production. All my Bruin fan buddies around here (where I work and live) loved him and thought he was the future star of the team.

The Broons have ~$9M in cap space. Rask will likely command at least $6.5M. As currently constituted, the best they can do for that last roster spot is ~$2.5M.

Moving Seguin (savings relative to Eriksson = $1.5M) and Peverley (savings relative to Reilly Smith = ~$2.2M) certainly helped, but perhaps more for next year and the ability to sign Bergeron long-term. Both Morrow and Fraser are currently non-roster players who don't count against the cap. Basically, they went from ~$5M in cap space to ~$9M in cap space by moving a highly-talented party-animal who may or may not reach his potential (I stand by my position that he will not be a top center in the NHL) and a grinding glass-breaker for a vastly under-rated, flexible winger (Eriksson can play both left and right with a left shot) and a couple of really good prospects (Smith and Morrow).

I don't get the sense that he was a big drag on the locker room, more that he was wasting his talent and not working hard enough. He probably took more of the coaching staff's and the veteran leadership's time than he should have - he frustrated his coaches and teammates more than actually pissed them off although I'm sure that the frustration turned into anger often enough. Maybe Julien's foot just got too tired and sore from kicking Seguin in the backside.

Dallas might be getting the next Phil Kessel, and given the way that Kessel is playing, that would be a good deal for the Stars.

I work with government rules and regulations for a living and I admit that I don't quite get the NHL CBA. If I understand it correctly (and there is a good chance that I am missing something), this is the situation:

Savard is being paid his full salary. But since he is Long-term injured reserve, the B's can spend above cap to replace him, but they do not have to. They did in 2011 but did not last season.

The B's have the option of buying him out, but they have not chosen to do so. That would cut their obligation for his remaining contract from $7,650,000 to $5,100,000. But doing so it doesn't buy the B's as much room under the cap.
