NHL 2013 regular season thread!

Yeah, and you can't pin it all on Bryzgalov. He HAS been getting worse as the season wears on, but he has no defense in front of him.

Might be time for Briere to hang 'em up. He hasn't shown me much of anything this year. Not sure what has happened to Coburn, but he's becoming a turnover machine. Timonen is getting old and has definitely lost a step. Giroux has been picking up a fair amount of assists, but not very many goals. Not sure if the Captaincy was given to him too soon. He seemed more loose and relaxed last year.

I've pretty much written off this season. And while you can't blame it all on Bryzgalov; but I'm beginning to think we should have kept the other Russian goalie! Bob has been on fire lately...

Since he was fired from the Montreal Canadiens, he has won 1 Stanley Cup and the Montreal Canadiens have won - how many cups? :smug:

Put another way - Claude has won more Stanley Cups than the last 19 Montreal teams.

That said, it is pretty obvious that this year's version of the Habs is heading in the right direction (tougher, more physical, more Bruin-like if you will) and it has a legit shot.

Finally, a belated thank you to Montreal and New Jersey for firing this Cup-winning coach. ;)

How many Stanley Cups does Boston have? 6.

How many does Montreal have? That's right. 24. ;)

18/24 players on the Bruins are Canadian. ;)

Your coach is Canadian. ;)

Prior to 2012, your team hadn't won a single Stanley Cup in 40 years. ;)

Montreal won 7 during that timespan. ;)

Montreal is 1st in the entire Eastern Conference while Boston is 4th. ;)

The Bruins have 5 NHL records whereas the Canadiens have 12. ;)

I've seen tons of 1st-seeded teams quickly fall prey to so-called lesser teams in the Playoffs. The Sharks alone have done this every year. Playoffs are about character as much as talent. There are surprises every year and I'm anxiously awaiting to see what this year will bring. That's why I find NHL hockey interesting ; it's unpredictable.

Wait, I thought you put him on ignore? :D

But as for the comments, I couldn't believe he was wading off into the "my team is better than yours" territory going up against the Montreal Canadiens. But I guess that is the nature of the BOS/MTL rivalry. Since moving to New England, I am learning more and more about it.

I did... and in typical fashion, gave him another chance.

The "my team is better than yours" thing is stupid. It's frankly kindergarten stuff. Unfortunately, there are people like that everywhere. On the hockey message board I'm on, I avoid a few teams' forums because of the collective atmosphere that is there. Most forums are fine and logical civil conversations are the norm even with differing opinions/ideas, but the 3 forums I have to avoid are the Bruins, Flyers, and Leafs. Anything ever said in a negative tone towards any player, staff member, or the team itself automatically triggers an endless deluge of verbal attacks onto the poster who eventually gets banned from that particular forum, regardless of whether that person had a point.

Consequently, the remaining members are over-the-top homers who belittle every team and every fan who doesn't cheer for that particular team. I hate fanboyism and find it to be a waste of time. I indulged the previous poster and hopefully he got the msg and will have learned to curtail his attitude.

To me, that whole concept is beyond ********. I love hockey with a passion, but I don't passionately hate any team or player. There's no player or team that benefits from my unconditional admiration, either.

I was a "the Penguins rule, everyone else sucks" kind of guy for a few years. I found a circle of friends who felt the same way, and we all thought we were really cool guys. Since, I've backed way off and enjoy the game of hockey much more. I attribute that change to a few of the guys who post in these very threads, some of whom have stopped posting. It also helped me when I started watching more college and international hockey. Heck, I even watch womens hockey now. I love the sport as you do.

The Detroit Red Wings will NOT be happy about this. :(

Just the opposite, Detroit Fans, Media and Mgmt. have been begging to go East for years. Not only is it better for the players not to have to travel three times zones continuously through out the season. But the fans won't have to wait till 2 AM to get road playoff scores. I really think it's effected Detroit physically more than any other factor since the end of the cap. Without as deep a team (post cap) they tended to run out of gas a lot in the third period on the coast.

Plus Detroit has had an historic rivalry with Toronto and Detroit is an original Six team. I think it's about the only intelligent decision Weasel Bettman has done in years.

I'm sure you can now understand why it was frustrating for me to even read these threads in the past.

Everybody was in their own little bubble and nobody cared at all about any other players or teams that weren't located in their town. It equally hilarious to me because there would be just ONE fan of a particular team and nobody would care about his posts. He also wouldn't care about anybody else's posts unless they'd touch on something related to his team. It was madness.

I've found THIS thread to be much more interesting! People seem to be generally-speaking more open-minded and interested in events/players/teams that are outside of their immediate vicinity. Night & day, really...

All true, but the Red Wings management had pushed for years to be in the West. I wrongfully assumed that the ownership would have held onto that same preference.

Unfortunately, the East now gets the Blue Jackets. :(

And there's also the awkward discrepancy between the number of teams in the East VS the West.

I'm a die hard Pens fan but I cheer for plenty of players and teams that I like. Playing fantasy hockey every year really amplifies that.
True. Makes some people look at players/teams in a different light instead of preconceived notions based on nothing but ignorance reinforced by more ignorance.

Doing well in my pool. Was last lagging way past everybody else until this past month where my players have stopped underperforming and have picked up the slack. I'm now a few points behind the top guy. :D

Re: Playoffs--

The Stanley Cup Playoffs will still consist of 16 teams, eight in each conference, but it will be division-based and a wild-card system has been added as a new wrinkle.

The top three teams in each division will make-up the first 12 teams in the playoffs. The remaining four spots will be filled by the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference, based on regular-season points and regardless of division. It will be possible, then, for one division to send five teams to the postseason while the other sends three.

The seeding of the wild-card teams within each divisional playoff will be determined on the basis of regular-season points. The division winner with the most points in the conference will be matched against the wild-card team with the lowest number of points; the division winner with the second-most points in the conference will play the wild-card team with the second fewest points.

The teams finishing second and third in each division will play in the first round of the playoffs. The winners of each series will play for berths in the Conference Championship series.

The two divisional champions in each conference will then play in the conference finals to advance to the Stanley Cup Final.

Thank you, Mike.

The Bruins-Canadians rivalry is much like the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry. My defense of Claude was less a "my team is better than yours" than a "what have you done lately." That line of argument tends to get under the skin of Montreal fans precisely because of their long and glorious history and because just like the Red Sox-Yankee rivalry for too many years it bore too much resemblance to the hammer-nail rivalry. No is more familar with Canadian or Yankee history than New Englanders since we lived it and hear about constantly.

But Strat-Mangler in his own inimitable style has provided me with reassurance that the B's are well-poised for the final push. Believe me, I was shocked, shocked to learn that there were 18 players from Canada on the Bruins, but apparently that is a good thing as they play a lot of hockey in Canada and they are passionate about the sport. Unfortunately for the team from Montreal, there are only 12 Canadians on the roster - has anyone notified the authorities of this? And it gets better - the team from Montreal has 5 players, including, sacre blue-blanc-et rouge, their captain, from the hockey wasteland known as the US of A. Fortunately, the B's only have 2 guys on the roster from the US of A who have played 8 games total so far this year.
