NHL PLayoffs 2009

Oh... late news - Flyers signed Emery to a 1 year deal per TSN.

I've been following this. 1 year 1.5 mil. I think nothing ventured nothing gained with this deal.

I have yet to check the message boards but I'm assuming there is going to be a lot of negativity surrounding this deal. I'm almost afraid to look at the message boards

I think Emery has a cup in him. I also have a feeling he's going to be shutting some naysayers up.

I'd like to know how much of the negative comments are based on race. :ninja:

I think the Flyers could benefit from another Hextall type goalie between the pipes. Biron is out,...they are going to be able to use the money to go after a good d-man.

Emery.............cup............

I can't believe you put that in the same sentence

If he cleans up his act and works on his work ethic (which I'm optimistic about),...then yes. He is a battling aggressive goalie that hit a bump after the Sens/Ducks Stanely Cup finals.

Grant Fuhr?

Aj

Negativity amongst the Flyer's faithful. (I know who Grant Fuhr is, but I'm not old enough to know if he had any roadblocks due to race). I haven't detected an undercurrent of racism, so I may have jumped the gun by calling that one. My apologies

FWIW,...I'm optimistic about this signing. I really do think he is going to shut some naysayers up this season. That said, the Flyers need to start developing their goalie prospects.

The Flyers message board reveals concern over his work ethic, which is legitimate, but I still wonder if there is a subconscious

No really, have you started following hockey just last week........
Emery .....cup........that is just ........I am at a loss for words

One game is just that, one game.....

IF the Pens can come out knocking heads, fore check like mofos, establish a down low game, solid cycle, draw a couple of penalties, get a couple in there early,Fleury stands on his head during the wings pushes and

..... a little luck.......

They could take it.

Hey,,,,, I'm a realist...

That said I want to see them win.

Good 'ol rough and physical hockey. Every one loves it until their team loses a game. Then it's time to pick apart all the missed calls and terrible refs.

If my team ever loses a game because of a bad call by a ref, then they didn't deserve to win anyway. Same goes for if the call is in their favor. In my time seriously watching hockey, I have yet to see the refs cost someone a game or give them a game. Bad calls for sure, but no way around that.

Xym....you mentioned it before. We all see 20 different replays from 20 different angles. We get a handful of TV analysts breaking down the play and offering insight. We get the time to sit and think for a few minutes what we would have called, without 20,000 people screaming at or for us. We don't have players and coaches on both sides chewing on our ears all night long. While they may miss a few here and there, I think they do a good job considering the circumstances.

Try having Sean Avery on your team... it's open season on the guy and it's completely tolerated. Maybe he deserves it? That's a matter of personal opinion, but if it continues into next season then we have a serious problem. He did the crime, tepid as it was, and he served his time.

I'm rooting for your Pens right now, but boy I've had serious issues with them and the refs in the past, utter infuriation as a bloody Chris Drury is taken off the rink from a blatant high stick. Refs have been good to the pens for the past few years. But, that said, this year is different. Crosby is different, Malkin is better although the frustration penalties are a little dangerous.

Sorry to break it to you but philly won't be serious cup contenders any time soon buddy.

even with emery.............;)

You just never know. About mid-way through this season, most "experts" had already stuck a fork in the Penguins. No way they were going to even make the playoffs, let alone vie for The Cup. Now they're one game away from it.

I too, am a Flyers fan. I would not hold them up among the higher echelon teams right now, but they have a solid nucleus and some up and coming players. They're not too many players away from being a legitimate contender. I think Paul Holmgren has done a very good job as G.M. for the most part. I do question a few of his deals, but all in all, he's done pretty well.

I've felt for a long time that the Achilles heel for the Flyers has been inconsistent goaltending. They just don't seem to be able to find that solid rock in goal like a Brodeur, Roy, etc. I don't know enough about Emery to say much either way.

But I certainly would not say definitely that they won't be serious Cup contenders anytime soon. Stranger things have happened...
