NHL PLayoffs 2009

Much respect for NBC and the NHL for denying the Red Wings from broadcasting the game from Joe Louis Arena.....

They did the same thing to the Penguins. I was in Pittsburgh for game six against the Flyers in Philly. My nephew and I walked down to Mellon Arena to watch the game on the grass on the big Jumbotron outside.....no go! NBC nixed the idea.

Congratulations, Pens. I must admit I didn't think you had it in you. But don't get to cocky, you guys were a goal post away from a tie. Osgood definitely did enough for the win. The Fluerry save on Cleary was the key.

The officiating left something to be desired, both teams got away with a lot of interference, and considering the calls that were missed, the first two Pen Power plays were jokes. But the officials didn't decide the game. Pittsburgh's fore checking was the difference.

Wow....what a game....what a game! Game seven coming up just as I suspected. If the Pens pull it out, it will be the upset of the century. If the Red Wings win, people will speak of a dynasty.

I saw some head scratchers from the refs tonight for sure. The goalie interference on Z was a joke, but it was also a joke when it was called on Kunitz in the last game. Perhaps a make up call, a few days later?

One Detroit observation.....was it just me or did Holmstrom not play much tonight? I am so used to seeing him in his usual spot camped out in front fo Fleury. Maybe the flow of the game prevented it, but I just don't remember seeing him down there all that much. Hard for me to figure out why Detroit lost tonight. They won this exact same game last year. They weren't intimidated, outhustled, or overmatched. Maybe they were figuring they could win it at home so there was a little less effort?

As for my Pens......Coach Bylsma....I love ya, I really do....but why in the world does Talbot play over two more minutes than Crosby tonight? Crosby only had about 17 minutes. I don't get it.

Fleury had the comeback game of his life. He was unreal tonight. Our defense really stepped up and helped him out. I think our defense made a concerted effort to rally around Fleury and make sure he didn't get rattled. I knew Detroit would come out trying to put as many pucks as possible on Fleury.

Props to Osgood for another great game.

Good game tonight....awesome actually. Now we all get to see the most exciting thing in professional sports...
A Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Finals for all the marbles... It don't get no better than that. The whole season comes down to one game and who wants it the most. Watch it go into overtime....lol GO PENS  )-(

Oh yes, I remember him. His was the second Pens jersey I ever bought, Grant Jennings being first. I totally wanted to beat Carolina in the playoffs, but when they showed Francis on the Carolina bench, my heart sunk. I no longer had this real desire to blow them out. I always liked him as player and a man.

I've always liked Ron Francis as well. A great player and a class act, much like Yzerman.

Since it's "Talkin' Old Pens" chat, what about Bob Errey? I think he would be a valuable asset to this team. I thought maybe Kevin Stevens, but I don't need all my guys strung out on crack. As for Stevens....remember when he got popped in the face against the Islanders I believe? I have never seen anything that brutal.

LOL about Stevens and crack. I actually saw an old school Stevens jersey in the stands at one point last night. As far as your comment about being popped in the jaw, are you talking about the game when his jaw was broken, he had it wired shut and came out in the 3rd with a face guard and, if I recall correctly, scored the winning goal? Talk about heart.

Remember Jim Paek? He was a good defensemen. I think he was from South Korea. The only guy I know of from that country who played in the NHL.

I definitely remember Fudge. That's what my fraternity brothers called him back in the day :)

I wouldn't call it the upset of the century, that's disrespecting the Pens imho.

I saw some head scratchers from the refs tonight for sure. The goalie interference on Z was a joke, but it was also a joke when it was called on Kunitz in the last game. Perhaps a make up call, a few days later?

That call was a joke. I'm not going into the officiating much today, since imho it wasn't the story (yes there were 2 missed calls against the Wings that I'd have made, but at least 7 against the Pens, but I also have the advantage of seeing replays and a higher angle than they do on the ice). I came into this game fully expecting the Pens to have 3 or 4 more power plays than the Wings, so from that standpoint, the refs didn't cost the Wings this game. Period.

Holmstrom has pretty much been invisible this whole series. I think he's just finally broken down. I really don't think the Wings were dumb enough to come in thinking let's win it at home. Hossa is snakebit/choking hard/sucking bad. They had some great chances but didn't bury them. The Wings did a great job weathering the storm of the first period, but the early goal in the second hurt - it came out of nowhere. Nice play by Staal taking advantage of the Lebda screw-up. That goal wasn't Ozzie's fault. Zetterberg missed a glorious chance and the breakaway by Cleary.... he should have gone 5 hole. If that's Datsyuk on the break, the game is tied.

As for my Pens......Coach Bylsma....I love ya, I really do....but why in the world does Talbot play over two more minutes than Crosby tonight? Crosby only had about 17 minutes. I don't get it.

Three possibilities, imho. Talbot is a bit better defensively and very gritty down low and among the boards, which is what the Pens really needed in this game. 2nd, Crosby just hasn't really matched up all that well in the series, maybe Bylsma had a hunch. 3rd, Bylsma was just that confident and was saving him for game 7.

Fleury had the comeback game of his life. He was unreal tonight. Our defense really stepped up and helped him out. I think our defense made a concerted effort to rally around Fleury and make sure he didn't get rattled. I knew Detroit would come out trying to put as many pucks as possible on Fleury.

The Wings really didn't get all that many shots on goal, but they did try to pressure. Fleury played the best I've seen him play (even better than the triple overtime last year). The D did a really great job collapsing around him, particularly Scuderi in the last minute. By the way, his hand was NOT over the puck, there was an angle from behind the goal that clearly showed it. He should have had a star of the game.

Props to Osgood for another great game.

-Mike

Absolutely, Ozzie kept the Wings in this game.

Much respect for NBC and the NHL for denying the Red Wings from broadcasting the game from Joe Louis Arena, which for the past 14 years have donated 100% of ticket sales to charity.

Very classy.

You mean like Darren Pang classy? How 'bout that suit he was wearing? You think a guy with a 6 hole could get more puffy in the shoulders and arms? It's like he bought an athletic cut jacket when he's only 5'5" and maybe 140 lbs. :eyebrow:

wow, what a nailbiter... Wings fans have to be stumped how some pucks stayed out, and Pens could have been 4-0 up after the 1st period had it not been for some great Osgood play.

All in all, I think the pens proved one thing tonight, that these teams are even. This is possibly the most even series since Colorado/New Jersey in '01. The Wings get away with looking better because of an extreme confident swagger. They've won, and it shows that they know how to do it, but in no way are they better than the Penguins. This is a night in, night out battle for the individual win on the night, and both teams fans should be very proud.

Me, I'm rooting for the Pens (very difficult for a Ranger fan), but only because I'm bored of the Wings, and they're reddish/blondish beards are creepy.

You think Kunitz is dirty and Kasparitis is "fun"? :eyebrow: If by some strange opportunity you had thrown Kaspy and Pronger together on the point you'd have the worst pairing of dirty players ever. When all else fails, or you're lacking in skill and speed, just throw an elbow that should do the trick. :rollno:

Kasparaitis liked the low bridges, no doubt. I should have put the "fun" in quotes. Sorry for not being clearer.
