NHL PLayoffs 2009

I think we can win game seven. We won last night with a great defensive effort, physical play at the blue lines, and most importantly with zero points from Malkin or Crosby.

How about that shot from Malkin that broke Z's stick? That was something else. Smart move by Z to clear the puck, but it seems like that would be illegal. I am not saying the refs miseed a call, just surprised you can throw the puck like that.

it's legal if you don't close your hand on the puck, and he definitely used a sweeping motion...

This game 7 is anybody's... a nice rest and I give no advantage for home field, it can help or hinder composure (see Washington)... Pens can win it, they just have to want it and their defense has to come up with the same game 7 effort that it got against Washington, who I believe are stronger offensively than Detroit.

You're allowed to hand pass in the defensive zone, that's what he did. Had he been in the neutral zone or the offensive zone it'd have been whistled dead and there'd be a faceoff.

The refs last night where BLIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not going to say anything about the canopener on Lidstrom, but Bruce MacLeod had some nice commentary about it on his blog at the macomb daily. Regardless, Fleury played his tail off in the crease.

As far as your above comment, the best fan sign I saw this year was:

HEY REF!

Datsyuk trusts his eyes to Dr. Rahmani.

YOU SHOULD TOO!!!

Today's the last day of school for us, I'm out for the summer. With no PC at home I'm not going to be posting nearly as much, though I'll try to stop in on Monday for some post finals comments, and also when I can during the summer. FWIW, it's been a pleasure chatting hockey with everyone here yet again. Have a great offseason everyone. I've got a feeling the Wings will step it up for game 7, but I also think Hossa, unless he's playing hurt, has played his way out of a long term deal in Detroit.

Oh... late news - Flyers signed Emery to a 1 year deal per TSN.

Good 'ol rough and physical hockey. Every one loves it until their team loses a game. Then it's time to pick apart all the missed calls and terrible refs.

If my team ever loses a game because of a bad call by a ref, then they didn't deserve to win anyway. Same goes for if the call is in their favor. In my time seriously watching hockey, I have yet to see the refs cost someone a game or give them a game. Bad calls for sure, but no way around that.

Xym....you mentioned it before. We all see 20 different replays from 20 different angles. We get a handful of TV analysts breaking down the play and offering insight. We get the time to sit and think for a few minutes what we would have called, without 20,000 people screaming at or for us. We don't have players and coaches on both sides chewing on our ears all night long. While they may miss a few here and there, I think they do a good job considering the circumstances.

As much as I hate pitt , Fleury did play well.
Not as killer as Osgood , but still kept his team in the game.
THE SLASH ON THE CLEARY BREAKAWAY MADE MY BLOOD BOIL!!!!!!!!!!!!

While you are right at saying that if you blame the refs for a loss , you had no chance winning in the 1st place.

But my god saying that they are doing a good job considering the circumstances, THEY SUCKED!!!!!!!!

I have been watching hockey for 20 years, and from my POV, IMO etc......and a lot of analysts say THEY SUCKED BIG TIME

Just wondering.....have you ever seen good officiating in a game where a team you hate wins?

I don't have 20 years watching hockey under my belt. I've seen some bad calls for sure along the way though. Do the refs SUCK? No. You can't ignore the variables that have been mentioned in this thread.

I am not blaming the refs for the loss, not by a long shot.
Pitt outplayed Det no question.
Even the goalie interference call when the det player was pushed by a pitt player into fleury was questionable , but not a bad call.
And the refs on yesterdays game where really bad, almost shamefull for a game 6 stanley cup final.
Let me tell you that they are not going to ref another final anytime soon.IMO IME

They are picked based on performance during the season
& overall experience.
Refing a stanley cup final is like an all star game for refs.
It is an honor to do so because not every ref will be called to do this.

Gotcha. Thanks for the info.

The other major sports are the same. The NFL uses a point system during the regular season to get a pool of refs for the playoffs.
