NHL Season 2023-24

I think I've told this story before several years ago, but you might enjoy this. About 45 years ago I was working as a mailman in a little town called Palmyra, PA. It was the next town east of Hershey.

Two of the Hershey Bears lived on my mail route. You might've heard of Geoff Courtnall. After the Bears, he went on to play for the Bruins, Caps, Blues, Oilers and Canucks. He and I used to talk if he was home when I brought the mail.

One day it was very cold, with snow and ice everywhere (including all the sidewalks). I walked up onto the porch and put the mail in the box. Started walking back out the sidewalk to the street. Then I hear Courtnall yell, "Hey Jeff!" I stopped to turn around, slipped on the ice, my feet went out from under me and I fell unceremoniously onto my ass. Geoff had a hockey stick for my son signed by most of the Hershey Bears.

I said, "Damn, Geoff! Of all the people in the world, I have to take a header in front of somebody who makes their LIVING on the ice!" We both got a good laugh out of it. Very nice and funny guy.

Couple of mild surprises at the draft, but the top two went as expected.

Today, the Penguins got even OLDER with the acquisition of Kevin Hayes. Honestly I do think he might have something left in the tank, but geez, how about given some of younger guys an opportunity in the lineup instead of plugging in another guy past his prime?

Curious to see how Tampa Bay uses all the new cap space with Sergachev and Jeannot now dealt away. One rumor site saying they might use that money going after Guenztel instead of keeping Stamkos. :cigar:

Last I heard, the Pens had an offer out to Guerin to see if he'd give up that gig in Minnesota and put on the skates again.
:D

We'll miss both of them-fan favorites-but Serg-y spent more time on the IL than on the ice and Jeannot seemed to be more trouble than he was worth.

As a long time Lightning fan I can say Sergachev and his terrible decision making with the puck and the failed experiment on PP1 this past season will not be missed. As of now, it seems his money is going to be going to Guentzel, which I'm OK with as I've made piece with Stamkos not coming back.
I did have high hope for Jeannot and his fists but it just didn't work out with him in Tampa. Maybe the Lightning will resign Watson and they can fight when the Lightning and Kings play nest season :D

True. Sergachev was popular but he did seem to make some 'questionable' decisions.

It's early, but I'd say Nashville has won Day 1 of free agency. Bringing in Stamkos, Marchessault, and Skjei are major moves that will improve the Preds greatly. Stamkos was a point-per-game guy last season, and he'll be fired up to improve on that this coming season.

Can't believe the term Boston gave Zadorov, six years @ $5M AAV. Nobody learned anything from the six-year deal the Pens gave Ryan Graves last season? :D

Speaking of the Pens, I mentioned earlier they acquired Kevin Hayes. And while I'm grateful they aren't overpaying and overcommitting to high-priced FA's, bringing in Grzelcyk(?) and Bouvillier isn't moving the needle at all. At least they jettisoned Reilly Smith.

According to the team-by-team draft ratings, the Flyers were the 2nd worst, earning themselves a D+. One other team was rated a D or a D-, but I can't remember which one.

If there's any good news for Flyers fans, they should be loaded up with picks in 2025; and 2025 is expected to be a much stronger draft pool. The rebuild continues...
