NHL Season 2023-24

It was a disappointing outcome but most hockey folks know what your chances of winning are if you can't figure things out and go down 3 games. The Oilers certainly exceeded my expectations this season after their rough start combined with lack of ability to strengthen their team in the knowns weak spots. I hope they spend this summer working on this and make another run.

Congrats to the Panthers for an exceptional year! I won't say that I am not disappointed, I was cheering for the Oilers, but it was a heck of a series and someone had to win. I've been a Paul Maurice fan from way back and seeing him finally win has taken a lot of the sting of losing away. I loved that he mentioned the Jets in his post game on ice interview!
It will be a very interesting "off season" as Florida has a number of free agents and not a lot of money to spend on them. As mentioned above, the next three days are going to be REALLY interesting!

Well speculation is that Ottawa might trade Jakob Chychrun, with the Flyers a possible trade partner. I wouldn't be TOO surprised if Travis Konecny is the trade bait. I love Konecny as a player, but I think he's on the last year of his contract.

He's good friends with Claude Giroux, so he might look favorably to that trade. I'd hate to see him leave the Flyers though. It looks like there's a decent chance that their 2023 #7 overall pick Matvei Michkov might finally be able to come over from Russia. That COULD make a Konecny trade more palatable. But it would be great to have both. :D

Been reading that rumor for the past week or so on several sites. I wouldn't trade Konecny for three Chychruns, and I'm a Chychrun fan from his days here in the desert. Ottawa has almost $21M invested on the left side of their defense...somebody has got to go (Chychrun/Chabot/Sanderson)

But I also wouldn't pay Konecny $10M/yr that his agent is asking for.

Speaking of hockey in the desert, looks like that mirage has evaporated. The long-awaited land auction was cancelled, and now we hear that Meruelo is throwing in the towel. No surprise to me. He walks away with a nice windfall of around $700M on his initial investment, and now doesn't have (nor want) to deal with all the headaches and roadblocks the locals are creating. Can't say I blame him. Everybody wants a team here in Phoenix, but they just don't want it their backyard. I knew it was going to pan out this way when the sale to Utah was finalized, but I expected him to keep the illusion going for a bit longer.

NHL hockey here was fun while it lasted. Always an ongoing soap opera, but still enjoyed having a team.

Well I was pulling for the Oilers/Canada but congrats to the Panthers. This was one of the most enjoyable offseasons I can recall. I always joke I want "every game to go to OT and every series to 7" but this year wasn't far off that mark. Just some great competition from the 1st series to the Final.

Oh, and a kicker bonus was learning that Meruelo is finally done and OUT and that noise is done. Good riddance.

Chychrun's father is(or was)an on-camera analyst for the Panthers. Dunno if that means anything.
Comcast and Bally Sports FL couldn't reach an agreement, so no local coverage of Panthers, Marlins, Heat, etc.

It'sa bad deal. I'm glad those players will get an opportunity to play where they will get support. Playing in a 4700 collegiate arena wasnt ok

Seems every cup winner the last decade has had several players bought off of them. Curious what happens

Take a deep breath...between Friday's draft and Monday's Free agency, it's gonna be mayhem. Could just be my perspective, but it seems there's even more pieces in motion than usual this year.

And with the cap increasing by several million, that means most teams will be more aggressive chasing (and overpaying) those top free agents.

Bill Zito is only getting a few short days to lock up his big free agents before all the chaos takes place. A couple of double espressos needed for sure.

It still burns my butt that the City of Edmonton hesitated for a second about building a rink for a billionaire and it seemed that the NHL was ok with moving the franchise. I do not understand why Bettman allowed the Arizona franchise to exist for so long.
