Nine Over Reggae

- 9 over reggae - Metheny, Hancock, Dejohnette, Holland

Anyone have a bass chart of this song/helpful advice with learning it? Can't seem to find one and trying to transcribe and notate it is hurting my brain. I don't normally have too much trouble counting along in weird meters but there's something about finding the 1 in this song which I'm just struggling with.

It's a bit easier to track when the groove kicks in at 1:43 or so

It helps (me) to hear/FEEL the 9 subdivided as 4+5. (count & tap quarter notes - 1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4,5.)
Yes - @1:43 is best to begin feeling the "9" as "4 + 5".

At the beginning, yes, it could be confusing, but, as Mambo4 said, when the rhythmic pattern is clearly pronounced around 1:43, start counting it as Don has mentioned,
1-2-3-4 1-2 -3-4 -5.
Just listen (and memorize) to the main (repetitious) orchestral tutti and apply the same counting "technique" at the very beginning.
Listen to that tutti at the very beginning.
