Nitro safe mute?

I really like the sound of my bass with a mute under the strings. What type of sponge is safe with a nitrocellulose finished bass?

What you want is a felt or cotton mute. Stay away from foam rubber.

I still love the sound of a "P" bass with Flats and Mutes.

I prefer my muting to be as close to the saddles as possible ... I use a soft foam that is only 1/2" thick and cut them about 3/4-1" wide, and then stand them 'on edge' under the strings, right against the saddle ON the bridge base plate ... there is usually room on the base plate just in front of the saddles, and then I kind of push it back 'into' the end of the intonation screws if they are sticking out ... it never contacts the body finish ... muting can have a different affect based on where it is placed as well as whether below or above the strings (if using a bridge cover)

I've just used peel-and-stick window and door insulation foam- same as I use for pickups- and stuck it to a dollar bill to act as a barrier. Since it's a rag, it won't scratch. At least NIME.

the description says these aren't recommended for nitro.

I don't have a bridge plate as my Hofner has a floating bridge. I'll have to try some different things out.
